High-definition radio (HD radio), general
The HD radio function is implemented by the high definition tuner control unit. The high definition tuner control unit is a combined receiver with HD radio function and a satellite radio for audio and traffic data reception.
The amplitude-modulated (AM)/frequency modulated (FM) reception function enables the reception of analog AM and FM signals. The reception of FM signals is optimized by using a double tuner.
The Weather Band (WB) function enables the reception of the US WB signals.
The HD radio function allows additional reception of digital carrier waves for analog AM/FM programs, which are also broadcast by the stations.
The HD radio function improves the audio quality using digital technology:
- FM (96 kbit/s):
- CD sound quality (no multipath interference)
- AM (36 kbit/s):
- FM sound quality (stereo)
The stations also broadcast other audio channels and data with the digital carriers. This supplements the program with up to two additional audio channels per frequency (e.g. foreign language program from National Public Radio (NPR)) and additional information (e.g. track and artist) can be received.
The broadcasting of additional digital carrier waves is called "On Channel". The digital station is tuned to the same frequency as the analog station.
The digital transmission process in the FM and AM band is known as "in-band".
In contrast to satellite digital audio radio (satellite radio) (SDAR), with HD radio regional stations and programs can be received without incurring fees.
The SDAR function allows reception of over 100 digital audio channels from the Sirius radio provider. Moreover, additional data such as title and artist and the entire station list are transmitted.
As of September 1, 2009, the reception of Real Time Traffic Data (RTTD) is also possible. RTTD is real time traffic data broadcast by the "Sirius satellite radio" provider. The data is available throughout the USA and is transmitted in loops of approx. t = 5 min. The data contain accident and traffic jam messages as well as traffic flow information. The data are made available to the navigation.
To achieve reception diversity, the Sirius satellite radio signal is transmitted 3 times (from two satellites and a network of terrestrial stations).
The HD radio function enables the reception of analog and digital AM/FM signals as well as WB signals.
The SDAR function enables the reception of signals for S-band satellite and S-band terrestrial from the Sirius provider's stations with the traffic information signals contained therein.
Operating instructions
The HD radio can be controlled with the following components:
- Buttons of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Voice control of the voice control system (VCS [SBS])
Function sequence for HD radio (High definition radio)
The high definition tuner control unit receives the AM/FM and the WB signals via the following route:
- Window antenna amplifier module 1
- Direct line
- Window antenna amplifier module 3
- Direct line
The high definition tuner control unit receives the S-band satellite and S-band terrestrial signals with the traffic information signals contained therein via the following route:
- Satellite digital audio radio (SDAR) antenna
- Direct line
The high definition tuner control unit demodulates the analog AM and FM signals using the two integrated double tuners and decodes the digital AM and FM signals using the integrated HD radio decoder chip.
The signals for S-band satellite and S-band terrestrial are also demodulated and decoded by the high definition tuner control unit. Demodulated and decoded analog and digital signals are transferred as digital audio and data signals from the high definition tuner control unit via MOST to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the navigation unit integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit shows the information contained in the signals via the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. This procedure runs internally in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The traffic data is processed and displayed in the navigation unit integrated into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The user can now select the desired station in the relevant band via the "Audio" menu item and the "Sat Radio" submenu item with the aid of the following controls:
- Buttons of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Multifunction steering wheel button group
- Voice control of the voice control system (VCS [SBS])
The control signals from the buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally.
The control signals from the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the following route:
- Direct line
- LIN converter
- LIN
- Steering column tube module
- Interior CAN
When voice control of the VCS [SBS] is activated, the voice commands are received by the hands-free system microphone group and forwarded via a direct line to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
More information on the activation and operation of the voice control of the VCS [SBS] can be found in a separate document.
Following selection of the desired station, the audio signals are sent by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via MOST to the sound system amplifier and from there via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Subwoofer speaker
- Left cockpit tweeter
- Right cockpit tweeter
- Left rear door tweeter
- Right rear door tweeter
