Function requirements

General information

The SRS is continuously monitoring the occupation status of the front passenger seat, the status of the front seat belts (buckled or not buckled) and adjusts its deployment behavior with the help of this information. The automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp in the upper control panel control unit and the airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) in the instrument cluster are used to notify the driver of the status of the SRS.

Front passenger seat occupation status

The restraint systems control unit receives the corresponding information from the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor.

Front seat belt status

The left front seat belt buckle restraint systems switch or the right front seat belt buckle restraint systems switch is operated by inserting the belt latch into the belt buckle. This is read in directly by the restraint systems control unit.

IMPORTANT The status of the rear seat belts does not have any influence on the deployment behavior of the SRS.

Impact detection

The restraint systems control unit determines the acceleration acting on the vehicle with the aid of its integrated sensors and the following sensors:

With the aid of this sensor system, the SRS is able to distinguish between the following types of impacts:

Function sequence for frontal impact

A frontal impact is detected by the restraint systems control unit via the integrated sensors.

The restraint equipment is deployed depending on the severity of the impact, the occupation of the front passenger seat, and the status of the front seat belts.

The following squibs can be ignited:

The following situations are taken into account:

This only applies, however, if the front passenger seat is known to be occupied. If not occupied then neither the emergency tensioning retractor nor the front passenger airbag unit are triggered.

Function sequence for side impact

A side impact is detected by the restraint systems control unit via the integrated sensors and the following sensors:

Function sequence for rear end collision

A rear end collision is detected by the restraint systems control unit via the integrated sensors.

In vehicles as of 1.9.10, a rear-end collision is also recognized by the NECK-PRO head restraint triggering device.

The activation of the restraint equipment takes place depending on the severity of the impact and the status of the front seat belts.

The following squibs can be ignited:

The NECK-PRO head restraint triggering device actuates the following components:

The solenoids release the NECK-PRO head restraints in the event of a rear-end collision. Using a pre-compressed spring, the impact plate of the NECK-PRO head restraint moves forward and at the same time upward, whereby the distance between the head and the head restraint is reduced and the potential for injury in the area of the cervical vertebrae is thus decreased.

The following situations are taken into account:

IMPORTANT In addition to deploying the corresponding restraint equipment, the restraint systems control unit initiates the following interventions:
