ENGINE 113.962 in MODEL 463
| 15.03.07 | The document has been updated to this date and will no longer be subject to revision. |
General:
Engine 113.962 is a 5-liter V8 gasoline engine with a cylinder angle of 90°. The new V8 engine is based on the already familiar V6 engine 112.
It is possible to use identical components as a result of the closely integrated production between engines 112 and M113.
The advantages of the new V8 engines are characterized by the following aspects:
- reduced weight
- reduced overall length
- improved fuel consumption
- lower levels of pollutants in exhaust
The exhaust emissions comply with present legal limits and also offer the necessary potential of being able to comply with future limits.
This has been achieved by a number of features including:
- three-valve technology
- two spark plugs for each combustion chamber
- phase-offset alternating double ignition
- increased exhaust gas recirculation compatibility
- air gap-insulated exhaust manifold with new internal piping
- catalytic converters featuring Termitall technology.
A variable intake manifold has been used with the aim of improving torque at low engine speeds. This has made it possible to dispense with a camshaft adjustment. Valve gear with one camshaft for each bank of cylinders, operated by a roller-type rocker arm with hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements, two inlet valves and one exhaust valve.
Compared to the V6 engine 112, the design of the V8 engine 113 does not require a compensating shaft. The compensating shaft is replaced by a guide sprocket for the timing chain.
Engine 113 is installed in the vehicle tilted to an angle of "x"=3°20 to the right in order to provide the necessary clearance in the area of the steering gears/AC compressor.
