- Basic prerequisite:
- Vehicle speed signal applied to instrument cluster.
- The daylight provides sufficient visibility.
- It is not raining nor snowing, the windshield wiper is switched off.
- The exterior lamp switch is set to position "Auto"
- The automatic driving-light is thus switched on.
- The overhead control panel control module (N70) along with the rain sensor and the position of the windshield wiper monitors the automatic light switch daylight sensor (B32/1).
Monitoring of the rain sensor and the position of the windshield wiper switch allows the overhead control panel control module to automatically actuate the headlamps in the event of rain or snow.
- The automatic light switch daylight sensor (B32/1) together with the sunlight sensor monitors the intensity of the daylight and in conjunction with the forward-looking light sensor it also measures the light conditions in the direction of travel.
- The vehicle approaches a tunnel:
- The forward-looking light sensor of the automatic light switch daylight sensor (B32/1) detects a darkened tunnel entrance.
- The light switch sensor unit actuates the overhead control panel control module (N70) using a "Darkness, lights ON" signal.
- The upper control panel control module evaluates the signal and sends the signal over the databus (1) for "Driving lights ON" to the left front SAM control module (N10/6).
- The left front SAM control module (N10/6), which is actuated by the exterior lamp switch's (S1) "Auto" function, forwards the "Driving light ON"
signal over the databus to the right front SAM control module (N10/7) and rear SAM control module (N10/8) and then simultaneously activates
- the standing and parking lamp (E1e3) in the right-hand lamp assembly
and
- driving light (E2e2) in the right-hand lamp unit.
- the standing and parking lamp (E1e3) in the right-hand lamp assembly
- The right front (N10/7) and rear (N10/8) SAM control modules receive the "Driving light ON" signal.
- The right front SAM control module (N10/7) actuates
- the standing and parking lamp (E2e3) in the right-hand lamp unit,
and
- driving light (E1e2) in the left-hand lamp assembly.
- the standing and parking lamp (E2e3) in the right-hand lamp unit,
- The rear SAM control module (N10/8) actuates
- the standing and parking lamp (E3e2, E3e8, E4e2 and E4e8) in the left and right-hand tail lamps
and
- the left and right-hand license-plate lamps (E19/1 and E19/2)
- the standing and parking lamp (E3e2, E3e8, E4e2 and E4e8) in the left and right-hand tail lamps
- For trailer couplings the "Driving light ON" signal is also sent to the trailer recognition control module (N28/1) and current for the trailer's tail lamps and license plate lamps switched to the trailer hitch socket, 13-pin (X58).
- The driving lights are switched on automatically, the vehicle then enters the tunnel with its lights on.
- The automatic light switch daylight sensor (B32/1) remains active when in a tunnel and automatically switches off the driving lights when it detects light at the end of the tunnel.
