ESP braking moment control circuit, function - GF42.45-P-2000VS
MODEL 220.08 /18 with CODE (472a) Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
The functions of the braking moment control circuit are controlled using the components of the electric/electronic system.
The voltage for circuit 30 of the ESP control module (N47-5) is supplied by the left fuse and relay module (K40/6); the voltage for circuit 87 is supplied via the right fuse and relay box (F1/1).
The ESP control module (N47-5) receives input signals from the following components:
- 4 wheel speed sensors
- Steering angle sensor over CAN data line
- Lateral acceleration sensor
- Yaw rate sensor
- ESP brake pressure sensor
- Stop lamp switch
- Parking brake switch over CAN data line
- ME-SFI control module over CAN data line
- ETC control module over CAN data line
- ESP OFFswitch over CAN data line
- BAS release switch
- BAS diaphragm travel sensor
The input signals are processed in the ESP control module to form output signals for the following components:
- BAS solenoid valve
- Solenoid valves in the hydraulic unit
- High-pressure/return pump (via relay)
- ME-SFI control module over CAN data line
- ETC control module over CAN data line
- ESP warning lamp over CAN data line
- ABS indicator lamp over CAN data line
- Multifunction display over CAN data line
- Brake lamps via rear SAM
The ESP control module (N47-5) uses the input signals to decide which of the 8 modes
- Normal mode
- ABS control mode
- ASR/ETS control mode (4MATIC)
- EBR control mode (see drive moment control circuit)
- ESP control mode
- ESP OFF mode
- BAS mode
- DTR control mode
must be activated.
Normal mode
This is the case when the driving state requires no control mode. All solenoid valves in the ESP hydraulic unit (A7/3) are in the basic position, i.e. switched to the de-energized position. The system is ready for braking.
This mode also exists when there is a malfunction in the ESP, BAS, ETS or ABS system. Drive torque control is not activated.
ABS control mode
The ESP control module (N47-5) uses the wheel speed signals to detect that ABS control is required and the appropriate solenoid valves are actuated in the hydraulic unit.
The solenoid valves for the front and rear axle in the ESP hydraulic unit (A7/3) are actuated individually (4-channel control).
ASR/ETS control mode (4MATIC)
The ESP control module (N47-5) records and processes the rotational speeds of all wheels.
If the ESP control module (N47-5) detects (using the speed signals) that one or several wheels are beginning to spin, it initiates the ETS control mode.
ASR/ETS control mode operates in 2 distinct control ranges:
- Control at the rear axle
If a wheel spins, the spinning wheel is braked by the appropriate wheel brake until the calculated drive slip is obtained. The other wheel can now transmit a drive torque that is higher by the amount of the braking torque. The drive torque at the front wheels also increases in accordance with the torque distribution in the transfer case (differential lock effect).
The pressure is increased at the second rear wheel from a vehicle speed of 10 km/h. The pressure level of the spinning wheel is reached at a speed of 40 km/h.
This prevents the second rear wheel from spinning and to some extent also prevents the vehicle breaking away. If the second rear wheel also begins to spin, this is controlled in the same way as the first rear wheel up to a speed of 10 km/h. When the speed v > 10 km/h the lower of the two brake pressures is matched to the higher brake pressure (synchronous pressure build-up) to prevent yaw motion due to different drive torques at the rear axle.
The ETS control mode at the rear axle is authorized when the activation conditions are fulfilled in the vehicle speed range of 0 - 80 km/h.
If the activation conditions persist as the vehicle accelerates above the 80 km/h threshold the ETS control mode is effective up to 130 km/h.
To brake the spinning wheels, the brake fluid pressure is introduced by the hydraulic unit into the respective brake caliper (pressure build-up). Solenoid valves in the ESP hydraulic unit regulate the braking torque with pressure buildup, pressure hold and pressure reduction phases.
- Control at the front axle
If a front axle begins to spin, the vehicle is brakes until the calculated drive slip is reached.
If the second front wheel also spins, this wheel is braked in the same way as the first front wheel but only if neither or only one of the rear wheels is controlled. The ETS control mode at the front axle is authorized when the activation conditions are fulfilled in the vehicle speed range of 0 - 40 km/h.
If the activation conditions persist as the vehicle accelerates above the 40 km/h threshold the ETS control mode is effective up to 80 km/h.

ESP control mode
The ESP control module (N47-5) receives and processes the signals for the wheel speeds, the steering angle, the yaw rate of the vehicle, the lateral acceleration and the brake pressure in the front axle circuit. After evaluating the input signals, the BAS solenoid valve (A7/7y1), inlet solenoid valves, switchover valves, high pressure and return pump (A7/3m1), and the appropriate solenoid valves are actuated in order to regulate the brake pressure in the individual wheel brakes.
ESP OFF mode
If the driver presses the ESP OFF switch (S76/6) the ASR acceleration slip regulation is deactivated and the ESP stability function is also switched off when the vehicle accelerates and when rolling. The ESP stability function remains operational during braking. EBR control is deactivated.
In this switch position one brake is applied via the braking moment control circuit up to a speed of 40 km/h if one wheel begins to spin. If activation conditions continue to exist, brake intervention continues up to max. 60 km/h. The braking torque is, however, reduced continuously.
BAS mode
The ESP control module (N47-5) uses the speed at which the driver presses the brake pedal to detect that emergency braking is required and initiates the BAS mode (refer to BAS Function).
Distronic control mode
The Distronic control module (DTR) transmits the signals for ART control to the ESP control module. There the requests are prioritized and forwarded to the engine control module, and if necessary a braking action is carried out by actuating the BAS solenoid valve.
The transmission display and warning function of the DTR is transmitted direct to the relevant receivers.
