MODIFICATION NOTES

15.12.05 Set toe on front axle only after installing new parts Step 27.1  
REMOVING Removing     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes caused by hydraulic fluid spraying out under high pressure. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize the hydraulic system completely before starting any work on the system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being pinched or crushed  when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lids, tailgates or sliding roof. Keep body parts and limbs well clear of moving parts.

1 Deactivate easy entry/exit function NOTES Otherwise the driver seat and steering wheel move into a different position if the driver door is opened or closed for example. Damage to the upper frame can occur when the SPECIAL TOOL holding device is installed.
IMPORTANT Disabling takes place via the buttons on the steering wheel in the "comfort" menu of the multifunction display, see vehicle-operator's manual.
 
2 Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) SPECIAL TOOL and fix in place with holding device NOTES On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.

3 Open engine hood    
4 Suction off oil from expansion reservoir of power steering m Hand pump  
5 Lift vehicle on lifting platform.    
6 Remove front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove and install wheels   AP40.10-P-4050Z
7 Remove lower engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105M
8 Press tie rod joints (10a) off steering knuckles   AR46.40-P-0200-02I

9 Remove steering coupling (25)   AR46.10-P-8000I 
10 Undo bolts (23a) for retaining plate (1g) on front axle carrier (1)    
11 Undo bolts (23g) and remove retaining plate (1g)    
12 Remove high-pressure expansion hose (30i) and return line (30f) IMPORTANTSPECIAL TOOL Seal off line connections with plugs.

13 Remove rack-and-pinion steering (23) INSPECT Check rubber mount (21) of rack-and-pinion mounting for signs of damage and replace if necessary: ↓  
    Remove rubber mounts (21) on rack-and-pinion steering mounting AR46.20-P-0600-02I 
INSTALLING Install     
14 Clean bolts, nuts and contact surfaces NOTES The bolts (23a, 23g), nuts and contact surfaces of the retaining plate (1g) and front axle carrier (1) must be free of oil, grease and preservative. Under exposure to heat the lubricants can liquify, allowing bolts and nuts to loosen.  
15 Push new locking plate with self-locking nut onto steering coupling (25)    
16 Insert rack-and-pinion steering (23)    
17 Turn rack-and-pinion steering (23) to center position   AR46.20-P-0600-01I 
18 Install steering joint (25) IMPORTANT Do not install engine compartment paneling. AR46.10-P-8000I 
19 Attach return line (30f) IMPORTANT Replace sealing ring.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.20-P-1001-01E 
20 Attach high-pressure expansion hose (30i) IMPORTANT Replace sealing ring.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.20-P-1002-01E 
21 Mount rack-and-pinion steering (23) and support bracket (1g) onto front axle carrier (1) using bolts (23a, 23g) IMPORTANT The bolts (23a, 23g), nuts and contact surfaces of the retaining plate (1g) and front axle carrier (1) must be free of oil, grease and preservative. When exposed to heat the lubricants can liquify, allowing bolts and nuts to loosen.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Rack-and-pinion steering to retaining plate *BA46.20-P-1003-01E 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bracket to front axle carrier *BA46.20-P-1004-01E 
22 Attach tie rod joints (10a) to steering knuckles   AR46.40-P-0200-02I 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.40-P-1001-01E 
23 SPECIAL TOOL Remove retainer from steering wheel SPECIAL TOOL Retainer Figure
24 Fill power steering pump and bleed   AR46.30-P-0010N 
25 Check steering for function and leaks IMPORTANT There is a grease cushion under the cover cap. A slight escape of grease is to be regarded as normal and is not to be confused with leakage.  
26 Mount front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050Z
27.1 Check front axle toe and adjust if necessary IMPORTANT When installing new parts. see: ↓  
    Perform chassis alignment AR40.20-P-0200I
28 Install lower engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105M
29 Close engine hood   AR88.40-P-1000M
30 Active assisted entry and exit feature
