The display screens "since start" and "since reset" for the fuel consumption can be activated via the system selection button (S110s3) and the scroll forward/back button (S110s1) of the multifunction steering wheel (MFL).

The fuel consumption is displayed in the following ways depending on the setting (miles or kilometers) and the national version coding of the instrument cluster (A1):

mpg (miles per gallon)
l/100 km (liters per 100 km)
km/l (kilometers per liter with code (498) Japan version)

The trip computer (RRE) determines the average fuel consumption by means of the distance covered and the consumption signal.

The consumption signal contains information about the quantity of fuel injected per unit time.

The instrument cluster (A1) receives this data in the following way:

The fuel-consumption signal is generated by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) or CDI control unit (N3/9) and placed as a message on the class C (engine compartment) controller area network bus (CAN-C).
The distance covered is determined from the rpm of the 4 wheels. The signals come from the ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5) via CAN-C.

After resetting it can take up to 3 kilometers/miles or 2 minutes until sufficient data is available in order to calculate the consumption correctly and display it. During this time, depending on the unit setting (miles or kilometers) and the national variant coding of the instrument cluster (A1), the display shows 5.8 MPG, 40 L/100 km or 2.5 km/L.

It is completely normal for the "since start" multifunction display (A1p13) (short-distance memory) and "since reset" multifunction display (A1p13) (long-distance memory) to show different values, since the two displays are based on different sets of data.

The "since start" display (short-distance memory) reacts much more sensitively to the current driving situation than the "since reset" display (long-distance memory).
