The purpose of the electronic speedometer (A1p8) is to provide a display of vehicular velocity. The electronic speedometer (A1p8) is actuated by a stepper motor.

The speed can also be displayed digitally:

Measuring the vehicle speed

To calculate the vehicle speed, the instrument cluster (A1) evaluates the wheel speeds of the following sensors:

The instrument cluster (A1) receives the wheel speeds in rpm from the ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5) via the class C (engine compartment) controller area network bus (CAN-C).

IMPORTANT As the tire circumference differs only very slightly among all the approved tires, no coding of the tire circumference is necessary.

Evaluating the wheel speed signals

Since the wheels do not always rotate at the same speed, all 4 wheel speeds must be evaluated. The actual process is relatively complex, which is why only a general description is provided here:

IMPORTANT If error messages are received for all wheels speeds, the speed is displayed as 0 km/h or 0 mph (indicator points to the left side of the scale).

IMPORTANT This evaluation of the wheel speed signals also applies for evaluating the distance traveled since the distance is calculated from the vehicle speed.

Limiter

The active limiter function is displayed in the lower part of the multifunction display (A1p13).

If the limiter is set, the next time the driver actuates the limiter lever (resume) the last speed set is displayed on the multifunction display (A1p13) for t = 5 s. The speed can then be set to a new value.

Winter tire speed limit

A permanent speed limit (adjustable in 10 km/h increments from 160 km/h to 230 km/h or in 10 mph increments from 100 mph to 140 mph) can be activated and set in the 2nd control level of the instrument cluster (A1) using the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) and left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110). If the vehicle speed exceeds the set speed limit a warning message appears on the multifunction display (A1p13).

IMPORTANT Only certain speed limits can be set for engine 612 and 646 (160 km/h, 190 km/h and 210 km/h).
