Remove/install rear suspension strut - AR32.25-P-1016I

MODEL 220 except CODE (487) Active Body Control (ABC)

MODIFICATION NOTES

25.4.03 Loosen spring control arm on rear axle carrier, step revised Step 9  
25.4.03 Loosen thrust arm on rear axle carrier, newly incorporated Step 10  
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/Install     
DANGER Risk of death  cased by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTES Replace self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
NOTES Special information on AIRmatic Model 220 AH32.22-P-1000-02I 
1 Discharge suspension struts concerned (41) using STAR DIAGNOSIS    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
2 Remove rear wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050Z
3 Remove cover (arrow) in rear shelf    
4 Unscrew pressure line connection (41a). TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA32.25-P-1006-04B 
    NOTES Residual pressure in suspension strut up to 3.5 bar.
If residual pressure valve is damaged, install new suspension strut (41).
IMPORTANT Seal off pressure line with blind plugs during repair work.
If pressure line connections or pressure lines are damaged: ↓
 
    Repair AIRmatic pressure line connection. AR32.22-P-2001-02I 
5 Unscrew nuts (41b). IMPORTANTInstallation:  Fit nuts (41b) then refill suspension strut in fully-assembled vehicle before torquing to specification.  
    IMPORTANTInstallation:  To facilitate tightening operations and ensure the correct torque on the nuts (41b), it may prove useful to remove the trim from the C-pillar. AR68.30-P-4490M
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA32.25-P-1004-04B 
6 Pull off grommet and disconnect electrical connector of damping valve unit (Y53x1/Y54x1).    
7 Unscrew bolts (72d) on spring control arm cover (72c).    
8 Remove threaded connection (2) of suspension strut (41) on spring control arm (72). IMPORTANTInstallation:  Fit nuts (41b) and tighten after filling the suspension strut on a vehicle which is ready to drive.

9 Remove threaded connection (1) of spring control arm (72) on rear axle carrier. TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA35.20-P-1001-01A 
10 Remove threaded connection (3) of thrust arm (4) on rear axle carrier. Model 220 except model 220.874/875/878

11 Pull down spring control arm (72) and remove suspension strut (41) by lowering it and pulling it out to the side. NOTES Do not damage brake hose. AR32.25-P-1017-02I 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA32.25-P-1004-04B 
    NOTES If replacing or reinstalling the suspension struts (41), check condition of suspension struts and if necessary: ↓  
REFER TO FORMS   Dispose of suspension strut OS32.25-P-0122-01J 
12 Install in the reverse order    
13 Fill suspension struts affected using STAR DIAGNOSIS IMPORTANT Pressurize to 5 bar.
NOTES During filling, the wheels should never be in contact with the floor; refilling with the suspension compressed leads to destruction of the air spring bellows in the suspension strut (41).
 
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
14 Check AIRmatic for leaks.   AR32.22-P-8100I
