28.3.03 Relieve the pressure in the Active Body Control (ABC) system, newly incorporated Step 3  
28.3.03 Pry follower joint off steering knuckle, newly incorporated Step 9  
28.7.04 Value changed from 43 Nm to 20 Nm +90 ° ∠ Value of 43 Nm in BA33.20-P-1002-01A deleted and value 20 Nm+90° ∠ incorporated into BA33.20-P-1018-01A *BA33.20-P-1018-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by body parts being jammed or crushed. Risk of injury  to skin and eyes caused by brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. AS42.46-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTES When working on the front-end assembly, be careful not to scratch, mark or notch the surfaces of aluminum parts. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected

IMPORTANTInstallation  Tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components only when vehicle is in the ready-to-drive condition.

1.1 Deactivate SBC brake system Model 230
IMPORTANT The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS:
Select menu item "SBC-Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Deactivate 'SBC' system".
Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.

2 Raise vehicle with lifting platform    
3 Remove front wheel    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove and install wheels   AP40.10-P-4050Z
4.1 Relieve pressure in front axle ABC system Vehicles with Active Body Control (Code 487) only. AR32.50-P-0001-01N
5 SPECIAL TOOL Mount guard plate for brake cover   AR42.00-P-0100-01A

6 Disconnect left front axle multiple circuit junction connector, major assembly compartment (X62/7)    
7 Detach left front brake pad contact sensor connector (S10/1x1)    
DANGER Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes. Pour brake fluid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
8 Detach brake line from brake hose (39) and seal openings IMPORTANT When loosening or tightening the brake line on the brake hose (39), take care not to twist its bracket. Use an open-end wrench as a countersupport on the sides of the brake hose fitting.
IMPORTANT Seal off connections immediately using stop plugs. SPECIAL TOOL The brake fluid expansion reservoir must not be allowed to run completely empty.
NOTESInstallation:  The brake hose must not be twisted (cracking).

9 Press the tie rod joint (10a) from the stub axle unit (5)   AR46.40-P-0200-02I

10 Press follower joint (8) out of steering knuckle (5)   AR33.20-P-0500-01N

11 Support front-axle half using COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS transmission platform and COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS transmission jack COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS Transmission platform *WE58.40-Z-1018-11A 
    COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS Transmission jack *WE58.40-Z-1030-11A 
12.1 Unscrew bolts (40c) from spring strut (40) Model 215, 220
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Bolts (40c) after tightening must lie flush with the suspension strut (40) or be slightly recessed.
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION
To replace the suspension strut: ↓
*BA32.25-P-1002-04B 
    Remove/install front suspension strut AR32.25-P-1017N
12.2 Undo nut on spring control arm (17) and press suspension strut (40) out of spring control arm (17) Model 230

To replace the suspension struts: ↓

    Remove/install front suspension strut AR32.25-P-1017R
13 Remove radius rod (18) from front axle carrier. NOTES If repair kit:  installed bolt (18a) may not  be twisted. When undoing the nut, the bolt (18a) must always be counterheld, as otherwise the locating tabs for caster adjustment in the rubber mount may be sheared off.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA33.20-P-1015-01A 
14 Remove track control arm (17) from front subframe. NOTES Do not twist bolt (17a). Always counter the bolt (17a) when slackening the nut, otherwise the locating tabs for camber adjustment in the rubber mount will be sheared off.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA33.20-P-1014-01A 
15 Lower front-axle half    
16.1 Remove upper transverse control arm (6) If necessary  
    Model 215, 220 AR33.20-P-0500I 
    Model 230 AR33.20-P-0500R
17 Install in the reverse order    
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Depress brake pedal several times before operating vehicle until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
18.1 Bleed brake system Model 215, 220 AR42.10-P-0010I
18.2 Bleed brake system with STAR DIAGNOSIS Model 230
IMPORTANT The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS:
Select menu item "initial startup after repair"/"after opening or exchanging one or more brake hoses".
Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.
IMPORTANT When performing the bleeding operation, it is essential to observe the instructions in the document "Bleeding brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS": ↓
