Control/warning messages, general 

The instrument cluster indicator and warning messages notify the driver about the current states of the systems installed in the vehicle. Various alternatives are available to the instrument cluster for the output of messages:

The messages output in the multifunction display are distinguished by:

In the process messages with high priority have priority over messages with lower or lowest priority.

For certain messages with high priority in addition a warning message is output which is shown against a red background. Messages of lower or lowest priority can be confirmed via the instrument illumination variable resistor (A1r1). They are then stored in the message memory. Messages with high priority cannot be confirmed and are stored automatically in the message memory. The messages can be scrolled through in the service menu.

The following systems and functions can request indicator/warning messages via the instrument cluster:

An active limiter function is shown in the multifunction display. After adjusting the variable speed limiter the next time the cruise control switch (S40) is pressed (resume) the speed last set is shown in the multifunction display for t = 5 s.

If the variable speed limiter is activated via the cruise control switch, a warning tone is output when the set speed is exceeded.

Function sequence for ESP® control/warning messages 

If the ESP® is deactivated using the ESP OFF switch (N72/1s1) when the engine is running, this is indicated by the ESP warning lamp (A1e41) being permanently on (up to 31.8.10) or ESP OFF indicator lamp (A1e30). In addition for fault messages from the ESP control unit a warning message can be output via the multifunction display.

Function sequence for ABS indicator/warning messages 

If the ABS is deactivated via differential lock switch group (S76), the ESP warning lamp and ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) are actuated permanently and warning message appears in the multifunction display.

If there is a fault in the ABS, the ESP control unit transmits a corresponding signal to the instrument cluster via the drive train CAN. As a result of this the instrument cluster actuates the ABS indicator lamp and issues a warning message via the multifunction display.

If a fault is found by the restraint systems control unit, the airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15) is actuated by the instrument cluster.

In addition a message is displayed via the multifunction display.

If one or more defective lamps are detected by the following control units, this is shown via a message in the multifunction display:

If a relevant pressure loss in one or more tires by the tire pressure monitor control unit via the tire pressure sensors a message appears in the multifunction display and the tire pressure monitor warning lamp (A1e66) is actuated.

The information on the audio/communication and navigation systems fitted in the vehicle is shown in the multifunction display.

The instrument cluster receives the information via the interior CAN.

The exhaust gases expelled from the engine are cleaned in an oxidation catalytic converter, a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a reduction catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalytic converter).

The AdBlue® reducing agent is also injected upstream of the SCR catalytic converter, and is converted to ammonia (NH 3 ) through thermal decomposition (heat-induced chemical reaction) and hydrolysis (water-induced chemical reaction).

The supply of required AdBlue® reducing agent in the AdBlue® tank is monitored by the following sensors, the signals of which can be directly read in by the AdBlue® control unit:

If the "Reserve" fill level in the AdBlue® tank is reached, this is indicated to the driver by an acoustic signal.

If the "Empty" fill level is reached in the AdBlue® tank, a plausibility check on the "Empty" fill level is carried out using a computer model. If the plausibility check also results in an "empty" fill level, an audible signal is given, an entry is made in the fault memory of the control unit (CDI), and the engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58) on the instrument cluster lights up. The driver then has up to 20 engine starts available, with an assumed trip distance of 32 kilometers in each case. The number of remaining starts is displayed in the instrument cluster. The vehicle can no longer be started after the last remaining "Start".

The requirements for this are sent by the AdBlue® control unit over the drive train sensor CAN, CDI control unit and the drive train CAN to the instrument cluster.

Parking brake warning function sequence 

If with circuit 15C OFF and switched-on parking light/low beam the driver door or front passenger door is opened, an acoustic warning and a message takes place in the multifunction display via the instrument cluster.

If the parking brake inspection switch is operated at a speed of v > 5 km/hS12, an acoustic warning is output via the instrument cluster.

In addition a message appears in the multifunction display.

In addition the brake fluid, parking brake and brake distribution warning lamp (A1e7) is actuated.

The status of the parking brake indicator switch is read in by the front SAM and transmitted to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.

An acoustic warning is output by the instrument cluster at speeds of v > 120 km/h.

The wheel speeds are determined via the left front rpm sensor (L6/1), the right front rpm sensor (L6/2), the left rear rpm sensor (L6/3) and right rear rpm sensor (L6/4).

The speed sensor signals are read in by the ESP control unit and transmitted to the instrument cluster via the drive train CAN. The instrument cluster calculates the vehicle speed via the wheel speeds.

IMPORTANT As of 1.9.09, the status of the front passenger seat belt is also evaluated for issuing a warning message.

National seat belt reminder warning function sequence 

The following signals are evaluated by the restraint systems control unit:

The rear SAM reads in signals from the restraint systems control unit discretely and passes these on to the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster outputs a national, visual and acoustic warning.

IMPORTANT The seat belt reminder message for the front passenger is only issued, if the front passenger seat is recognized as occupied.

1st warning tone phase:

A quiet gong is sounded for a maximum t = 20 s at an interval of t = 4 s.

After this a change is automatically made to the 2nd warning tone phase.

2nd warning tone phase:

A quiet gong is sounded for a maximum t = 20 s at an interval of t = 2 s.

After this a change is automatically made to the 3rd warning tone phase.

3rd warning tone phase:

A quiet gong is sounded for a maximum t = 20 s at an interval of t = 1 s.

After this a change is automatically made to the 4th warning tone phase.

4th. warning tone phase:

A loud gong is sounded for maximum t = 93 s at an interval of t = 0.5 s.

IMPORTANT The seat belt warning lamp (A1e9) flashes during a warning tone output. Once all the acoustic warning phases have been passed through it is actuated permanently.

IMPORTANT The acoustic warning only takes place from a vehicle speed of v > 25 km/h.

A too low fill level in the brake fluid reservoir is detected by the brake fluid indicator switch (S11) and transmitted from the front SAM to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN. As a consequence the instrument cluster outputs a corresponding warning message via the multifunction display.

Turn signal confirmation function sequence 

The acoustic feedback via the activated turn signaling or the switched-on hazard warning system is realized via the function check of the turn signal light.

The visual feedback takes place via the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1) and right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2).

If the instrument cluster receives a message at a vehicle speed of v > 5 km/h from the ME-SFI control unit or from the CDI control unit via the drive train CAN that the tank cap is still open, the fuel reserve warning lamp (A1e4) flashes at a frequency of f = 2.5 Hz. At the same time the message "Tank cap open" appears in the multifunction display.

A firmly attached fuel level sensor is detected by comparing any change in the fill level of the fuel tank with the calculated composite mileage.

If the instrument cluster detects a faulty condition, the fuel gauge is gradually moved to the zero point and the fuel reserve warning lamp is switched off if necessary.

The systems (e.g. trip computer) which use the fuel consumption information are informed about the faulty status.

The information required to detect a jammed fuel level sensor is obtained by the instrument cluster as follows:

Coolant temperature warning function sequence 

The coolant temperature is recorded by the coolant temperature sensor (B11/4). The signals from the coolant temperature sensor are read in by the CDI control unit or by the ME-SFI control unit.

The CDI control unit or ME-SFI control unit passes on the information via the drive train CAN. An optical and acoustic warning message is output in the instrument cluster at a coolant temperature of T > 130 °C.

If a malfunction occurs in the diesel fuel injection system, in the ignition system or in the exhaust system, the engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58) is actuated. The signal for actuating the engine diagnosis indicator lamp is transmitted by the ME-SFI control unit or by the CDI control unit to the instrument cluster via the drive train CAN.
