General information 

The oil sensor (oil level, temperature and quality) (B40) continuously monitors the oil level and transfers the corresponding data to the ASSYST system.

Oil refillings can be detected, and result in a quantity rebate, which correspondingly extends the service interval.

The multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1) indicates when the oil level is too high or too low.

Oil warnings are displayed:

• Automatically, at the earliest, t = 60 s after starting the engine and at an oil temperature greater than 60°C.
• If the oil level is too high, the oil can symbol appears on the multifunction display (A1p13) and the words "Reduce engine oil level!". A brief warning tone is additionally sounded.
• If the condition of the oil is poor (water in oil), the oil can symbol appears on the multifunction display (A1p13) together with the words "Engine oil, visit workshop!". A brief warning tone is additionally sounded.
• When the oil level is critically low, the oil can symbol appears on the multifunction display (A1p13) together with the words "Engine oil level, visit workshop".
• At the minimum oil level, the oil can symbol appears on the multifunction display (A1p13) together with the words "Engine oil level, add 1 l of engine oil at next service station stop!". A brief warning tone is additionally sounded.
• In the event of high oil loss (hole in oil pan), the oil can symbol appears on the multifunction display (A1p13) together with the words "Engine oil level, stop engine immediately!". In addition, a warning tone is sounded.

Procedure for displaying the oil quantity:

• Turn transmitter key (A8/1) to position "Circuit 15 ON" in EIS control unit (N73).
• Press the system selection pushbutton (S110s3) on the multifunction steering wheel until the multifunction display (A1p13) shows the temperature display and trip odometer.
• Press the scroll forward/back button (S110s1) until the multifunction display (A1p13) displays the message "Engine oil level measurement in progress! Measurement is correct only when vehicle is on level ground".
• If the measurement is not interrupted, the message "Engine oil level measurement in progress" appears on the multifunction display (A1p13) after approx. t = 3 s.

The following messages can then appear on the multifunction display (A1p13):

• "Engine oil level OK"
• "Engine oil level, reduce oil level"
• "Engine oil level, top up with 1.0 l"
• "Engine oil level, fill in 1.5 l"
• "Engine oil level, fill in 2.0 l"

The quantity of oil to be added can be specified in liters or quarters depending on the national version

The missing quantity of oil which is displayed is no longer changed during the display. A change in the oil level cannot therefore be directly observed in the display.

Waiting time 

The oil level can be measured only after expiration of a waiting time following "Circuit 61 OFF". If the driver attempts to check the oil level with "Circuit 61 ON", the message "Engine oil level not with engine running" appears on the multifunction display (A1p13). The waiting time after "Circuit 61 OFF" depends on the engine oil temperature. This is:

• up to 20°C → 30 min
• as of 60°C → 1 min

At temperatures between 20°C and 60°C, the waiting time assumes corresponding intermediate values.

If the message "Observe waiting time!" appears on the multifunction display (A1p13), the waiting time described previously was not maintained.

Display in the event of measuring system errors 

In the event of a fault in the measuring system, e.g. a defective oil sensor (oil level, temperature and quality) (B40), the oil can symbol and the words "Engine oil, visit workshop" appears, at the earliest, t = 30 s after the fault occurs.

For diagnosis, read out the central gateway control unit (N93) with STAR DIAGNOSIS. The central gateway control unit (N93) receives the data from the oil sensor (oil level, temperature and quality) (B40) via the Controller Area Network bus, Class C (engine compartment) (CAN C) from the ME control unit (N3/10) or CDI control unit (N3/9).

Replenishment recognition 

The last 10 top-up quantities and the corresponding kilometer readings of the current interval can be called up with STAR DIAGNOSIS.

Normally, recognition that oil has been added is indicated by an increase in the remaining distance on the multifunction display (A1p13).

Oil refillings are only basically recognized if the following conditions are fulfilled:

• The refilling quantity is at least 0.5 l.
• Following an oil refilling, a journey of at least 5 km must be undertaken under normal driving conditions with an oil temperature of at least 70°C.

Oil change 

An oil change may only be confirmed in conjunction with the total service. Resetting can be carried out via the instrument cluster (A1) or via STAR DIAGNOSIS.

On resetting, the following data are stored:

• Current kilometer reading, rounded to 100,
• Total of top-up quantities in the last interval
• Remaining distance
• Remaining time
• Product of quality factors

The data for the last 5 resets are stored in ASSYST. This data can only be read out with STAR DIAGNOSIS!
