Damage code Cause Remedy
33 142 36   IMPORTANT Most of the complaints on front axle noises are not caused by a damaged suspension strut. For this reason do not replace suspension strut.
After inspecting torque struts that have been removed because of complaints, we have determined that a very high percent of them are actually in good working order. Therefore please do not replace the torque struts on the first instance of this problem.
If, however, the torque struts do appear to be the problem, please inspect them using the method described below and if necessary report this to the MPC with the parts. Reported parts should be sent to GSP/TPP for further inspection.

  Cause 1:  Remedy 1:
33 142 36 Rubber bearing on spring link cracked. 1 Perform a visual inspection of the rubber mount for the spring link.
IMPORTANT Series production modifications as follows: IMPORTANT Rubber bearing cracked: ↓
  1. Use of kidney bearing with thrust washer for all engines, as of
MODEL 220 ... A > 260150
MODEL 215 ... A > 022700
2 Remove spring link. AR33.15-P-0170I
  2. Use of rotation-symmetrical spring link bearing with thrust washer except engine 112, as of
MODEL 220 ... A > 264960
MODEL 215 ... A > 023615
3 Remove/install/replace spring link bushing (with spring link removed). AR33.15-P-0170-02I
SPECIAL TOOL Extraction and insertion tool Fig 1
  3. Uniform rotation-symmetrical spring link bearing with thrust washer for all engines, as of
MODEL 220 ... A > 287630
MODEL 215 ... A > 027010

IMPORTANT Temperature encapsulation introduced into series production (except 12 cylinder engine) as of IMPORTANT If there are any visible scratches on the mount: ↓
  MODEL 220 A > 292586 4 Remove/install/replace integral carrier for front axle.
  MODEL 215 A > 027716 MODEL 215 AR33.10-P-0100N
    MODEL 220 AR33.10-P-0100I
IMPORTANT Temperature encapsulation introduced into series production (except 12 cylinder engine) as of
MODEL 220 A > 316716
MODEL 215 A > 031546
5 Install spring link. AR33.15-P-0170I
6 Retrofit temperature encapsulation on integral carrier.
7 Cut assembly opening on temperature encapsulation with knife (only for 12cylinder engines, see figures).
IMPORTANT Temperature encapsulation introduced into series production (except 12 cylinder engine) as of
Model 220 ... A > 292586
Model 215 ... A > 027716
IMPORTANT Temperature encapsulation introduced into series production on 12 cylinder engines as of
Model 220 ... A > 316716
Model 215 ... A > 031546

  Cause 2:  Remedy 2:
33 113 D1 The boot on the supporting joint is damaged. This leads to play in the supporting joint. 1 Inspect boot and check for play in the supporting joint.
IMPORTANT Supporting joint has been modified in the series production as of VIN A 151974. IMPORTANT If damage is visible and/or excessive play present: ↓
    2 Remove/install/replace supporting joint. AR33.20-P-0440I
  Cause 3:  Remedy 3:
33 140 36 Torque strut joint may be worn. 1 Check torque strut joint play.
IMPORTANT Torque strut joint has been modified in the series production as of VIN A 204 000 IMPORTANT Lift vehicle so that there is no load on the wheels.
2 Move torque strut in vertical direction up and down in the vicinity of the ball joint After the torque strut joint has been improved, it can be ruled out as a cause of the noises.
IMPORTANT If, however, vehicles as of this VIN have problems with their torque struts, they should be reported to the respective MPC with the parts.

IMPORTANT If play can be felt: ↓
    3 Replace torque strut. AR33.15-P-0160I
  Cause 4:  Remedy 4:
33 140 36 Rubber bearing on torque strut cracked. 1 Carry out visual inspection.
IMPORTANT Replace only if torque strut rubber bushing is visibly damaged:
↓

    2 Replace torque strut. AR33.15-P-0160I
