Lower front axle - AR33.10-P-0101M

MODIFICATION NOTES

30.4.03 Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform, notes on safety included for the first time.    
30.4.03 Turn key in electronic ignition switch control unit to position "0", included for the first time. Step 2  
30.4.03 Remove air filter housing, included for the first time Step 3.1  
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
IMPORTANTInstallation  Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.    
1.1 Deactivate easy entry/exit function Vehicles with memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors) code 275
NOTES Otherwise the driver seat and steering wheel move into a different position if the driver door is opened or closed for example.
Damage to the upper frame can occur when the SPECIAL TOOL holding device is installed.
IMPORTANT Deactivation is done using the buttons on the steering wheel in the "comfort" menu of the multifunction display; see operator's manual.
 
2 Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with SPECIAL TOOL retainer. IMPORTANT Swivel sun visor to side and SPECIAL TOOL insert retainer.
NOTES On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.

3 Switch ignition off, remove ignition key (transmitter key) IMPORTANT On vehicles with code 889 Keyless Go: Press keyless go start/stop button repeatedly until the ignition is switched off.
Remove the Keyless Go transmitter card or transmitter key from the vehicle and store beyond the reach of the transmitter (min. 2 m).
 
4.1 Remove air filter housing Model 220.028/ 128 AR09.10-P-1050M
5 Raise engine slightly until front engine mounts are relieved of load NOTES Do not stretch engine mounts since this can damage the vulcanization.  
    Model 220 except 220.028 /128 AR33.10-P-0100-01R 
    Model 220.028/ 128 AR01.10-P-7500-03M

6 Raise vehicle with lifting platform    
7.1 Remove lower engine compartment paneling Vehicles with gasoline engines AR61.20-P-1105M
7.2 Remove bottom sections of soundproofing capsule Vehicles with diesel engines AR94.30-P-5300M
8 Remove bolt (25a) of steering coupling (25) at lower steering shaft (80a) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace locking plate (25f) with self-locking nut.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1001-01E 
9 Insert suitable tool in the bore of the steering coupling (25) or in the bore of the lower steering shaft (80a) and pull lower steering shaft (80a) upwards out of the steering coupling (25) NOTES Do not counterhold at the rubber boot or at the plastic temperature protection disk for the lower steering shaft (80a). Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage) as the lower steering shaft is sensitive to lateral forces.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Insert lower steering shaft (80a) all the way into the steering coupling (25); pay attention to the studs of the steering coupling (25) while doing so and the groove of the lower steering shaft (80a) (arrows).
 
10 Unscrew bolts (40c) at bottom of both suspension struts (40) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Bolts (40c) after tightening must lie flush with the suspension strut (40) or be slightly recessed.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Except model 220.8 and except model 220 with code Z07 *BA32.25-P-1002-04B 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 220.8 and model 220 with code Z07 *BA32.25-P-1006-04C 
11 Remove bolts (1g) of front engine mounts at front axle carrier (1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Except model 220.028 /128 *BA22.10-P-1001-01L 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 220.028 /128 *BA22.10-P-1001-01D 
12 Prop front axle carrier (1) using COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS transmission platform and COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS transmission jack   AR33.10-P-0100-03I

13.1 Detach pressure supply valve unit from front axle carrier (1) Vehicles with Active Body Control (Code 487) only. AR32.50-P-0003-01M
14.1 Unscrew bolts (3) and take off ABC lines Vehicles with Active Body Control (Code 487) only.  
15.1 Unscrew bolts (4) and take off ABC lines Vehicles with Active Body Control (Code 487) only.  
16 Remove bolts (1f) from front axle carrier (1) at front end IMPORTANT The bolts (1f) are self-tapping, so the following points must be observed:
  • Never retap the thread in the side member
  • Replace bolts
  • Use only original bolts (4 x)
  • Do not attach bolts at an angle when screwing in
  • Do not use an impact bolt tightener
  • Observe tightening torque

IMPORTANTInstallation:  Before tightening the bolts (1f), align the front axle carrier (1) on the left and right using drift (a, 14.8 mm diameter). After this, insert rubber plugs.

17 Lower front axle carrier (1) NOTES Only lower front axle carrier (1) to the extent that no lines and no components are damaged  
18 Install in the reverse order    
19 Perform a wheel alignment check Model 220 except model 220.8, except model 220 with special protection version code 979, with top protection code Z07 AR40.20-P-0200I
