  1. Clamp commercially available dia gauge SPECIAL TOOL in gauge stand and mount on SPECIAL TOOL measuring plate.
  2. Adjust the dial indicator on the measuring member (051b) 124 589 14 21 00 part 01 under approx. 3 mm preload to "0", thus the measuring member height "B1" is adjusted.
    Fig 6: Identifying Member Height

  3. Place tapered roller bearing outer race (46b) onto the tapered roller bearing inner race of the drive pinion (47), and position magnetic disk (052c) 126 589 00 21 00 Part 16.
  4. Insert the drive pinion (47) into the SPECIAL TOOL measuring plate and measure the drive pinion height with tapered roller bearing and magnetic disk (052c).
  5. Enter number 1 in the data sheet

  6. Read off the difference "B" between the measuring member height "B1" and the drive pinion height using the magnetic disk (052c) and enter in the data sheet under digit 1 (e.g. 1.30 mm).

  7. number 2 in the data sheet

  8. Read off the basic deviation "a" of the drive pinion at the end face (+ or -) and enter in the data sheet under digit 2 (z. B. +0.27).
  9. Calculate interim sum in the data sheet

  10. Add (+) or subtract (-) values from digit 1 and 2, depending on the (+) or (-) prefix of the value on the drive pinion.

  11. Insert the measuring member (051b)part 01 of the SPECIAL TOOL measuring device 124 589 14 21 00 into the rear axle housing.
  12. Bolt on the measuring member (051b) with fixing piece 124 589 14 21 00 part 02 and hexagon bolt.

    G04636468
  13. SPECIAL TOOL Insert dial indicator (052a) with measuring pin into the SPECIAL TOOL measuring device (052) 126 589 00 21 00

IMPORTANT The measuring pin for the SPECIAL TOOL dial indicator (052a) is screwed into the adjusting piece (052b) 126 589 00 21 00 part 10

  14. Press the adjusting piece (052b) 126 589 00 21 00 part 10 against the SPECIAL TOOL measuring device (052) and SPECIAL TOOL adjust dial indicator (052a)to "0" under 2 mm preload. Tighten the clamp screw, in the process check the "0" position of the SPECIAL TOOL dial indicator (052a) and adjust if necessary.

  15. SPECIAL TOOL Insert the measuring device (052) through the left bore in the rear axle housing.

NOTES When inserting the measuring device SPECIAL TOOL (052) SPECIAL TOOL in the rear axle housing, ensure that the measuring pin of the dial gage is not damaged in the bore.

  16. Enter number 3 in the measurement sheet

  17. Measure the difference "A1" between the adjusted gauge dimension and end face of measuring member and enter in the data sheet under digit 3 in the positive (+) or negative direction (-) (e.g. - 0.15 mm measured and thus in negative direction).

IMPORTANT The specification of positive (+)or negative (-) direction is related to the direction of rotation of the dial gage pointer. SPECIAL TOOL The counterclockwise direction of rotation means negative direction and clockwise means positive direction.

  18. Calculate the thickness of the shim "S" in the data sheet

  19. Add (+) or subtract (-) interim sum of the values from number 1 and number 2 as well as the value from number 3. The calculated value equals the thickness of the shim.
Fig 12: Calculating The Thickness Of The Shim In The Data Sheet
    G04636471
    EXAMPLE:

    1. Measure difference between measuring body height "B1"  and height of drive pinion with magnetic disk "B"    =   1,30
    2. Read off basic deviation "a"  on drive pinion   =
    =
    +
    -
    0,27
      Intermediate total    =   1,57
    3. Measure difference "A1 "  between set gauge dimension and front face of measuring body Negative direction = + 0.15
        Positive direction = -
      Thickness of shim "S"    =   1,72
  20. SPECIAL TOOL Take measuring device (052) out of the rear axle housing. Detach measuring member (051b).
  21. Insert the shim with the calculated shim thickness "S" into the rear axle housing.

IMPORTANT Only hardened shims may be used. They are available in various thicknesses (see parts list). If necessary, grind down the shim accordingly.
