The navigation system route guidance is largely supported by the following voice outputs:
- Direction information
- Name of the street, into which the driver must turn
In the case of streets without names, the compass direction is given. The compass direction information is omitted in the case of streets (e.g. in towns) which are designated by a name.
The voice data are originally stored on the CD as individual word segments. This data record is automatically sent from the CD to the navigation processor and stored there.
The navigation processor links these word segments to form complete instructions or information. In addition, signals are generated, which are sent via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the audio gateway control unit, where they are amplified and then played through the vehicle speakers.
The audio gateway control unit is fully integrated in the radio and navigation unit (A2/56).
Several driving recommendations in quick succession are combined into a single voice output.
Reading in of national language by the CD
The following national languages can be loaded:
- German
- English
- French
- Italian
- Spanish
- Dutch
- Swedish
- Danish
- Portuguese
In the operating unit of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) the data for the voice output from is transferred from the CD to the navigation processor, where it is then stored in a memory.
It takes a few seconds to read in the national language and this changes both the voice output and the menu texts in the display.
Reading in of the CD takes place automatically after a power failure.
During the time a national language is being loaded from the CD, it is necessary to avoid severe vibrations (e.g. on bad roads). Otherwise the voice output might be broken up. If this happens the national language must be reloaded.
Control of the voice output
If a major emergency message is transmitted, the voice output consists only of this message as this has absolute priority and must not be interrupted by any other message. If the volume is altered during a navigation system voice output, this value is regarded as the specified value for the next navigation system voice output.
The following possibilities are available for setting the volume:
- Setting a value between the audio source and the voice output.
- Setting a value between the voice output and the audio source.
- If the volume of the audio source is lower than the voice output, the volume of the audio source is not altered.
- If the volume of the audio source is the same or higher, during the voice output it is set below the volume of the voice output heard at that moment. As soon as the voice output is ended, the volume of the audio source is restored to the original setting prior to the voice output.
- Both the audio source and the voice output may have the same volume. The voice output can also be completely faded out.
The volume of the voice output has a minimum value and a maximum value. This value cannot be set below the minimum value or above the maximum value during the voice output. At the end of the voice output, these values are retained for the next voice outputs.
Voice output mute circuit
The navigation voice output can be muted by pressing the "MUTE" button for t ≤ 2 seconds during a voice output. In this case, a window appears in the display with the message "Driving instructions muted".
The mute feature applies only for the current voice output.
The voice output is activated:
- by repeatedly pressing the "MUTE" button,
- by pressing the "NAV-Repeat" button,
- by switching the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) off and on,
- by switching the navigation system off and on, or
- automatically after completion of the current navigation.
If a traffic news message is heard at the same time as a voice output, then, when pressing the "MUTE" button, the traffic news message is muted. On pressing this button a second time, the voice output is muted.
