- Deactivate SBC brake system. See DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITH STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM) or DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITHOUT STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM) under SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Read out fault codes with STAR DIAGNOSIS compact diagnosis system according to menus on display. See Figure .
- Lower fluid level in expansion reservoir to "MIN" marking to prevent brake fluid reservoir over flowing when brake caliper pistons are pushed back.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels.
- Disconnect brake pad contact sensor electrical connectors.
- Drive out retaining pins (41) with a punch and remove retaining plates (31d). See Fig 1 .
- Remove brake pads (43) from brake caliper (31a). If brake pads are seized, lever brake pads out of brake caliper.
- Press brake pad contact sensors out of brake pad backing plate. Check brake pad lining thickness. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS . Check brake caliper for leaks and dust seal for damage, replace calipers if they are leaking or dust seals are damaged. See BRAKE CALIPER (FRONT) . If calipers are not leaking and dust seals are not damaged, go to next step.
- Secure one set of pistons with a wedge to prevent them from slipping out, while pressing in the other set of pistons with resetting device (031).
- Clean perforation of brake discs if necessary.
- Installation is the reverse of removal. Defective contact sensors must be replaced. Do not use any sharp edged or pointed objects for cleaning brake pad guides. Activate SBC brake system. See DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITH STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM) or DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITHOUT STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM) under SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Inspect fluid level in expansion reservoir, correct level if necessary.
NOTE:
When levering out the brake pads insert a wooden or plastic wedge between lever and brake caliper.
NOTE:
If pistons are difficult to move, replace calipers.
