Removal & Installation

  1. Deactivate SBC brake system. See DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITH STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM)  or DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITHOUT STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM)  under SERVICE PRECAUTIONS.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels.
  3. Remove rear brake discs. See BRAKE DISC (FRONT & REAR)  .
  4. Relieve load on cable slack adjuster by turning screw (89) out. See Figure .
  5. Remove lower retracting spring (111) using extraction and insertion tool (040). See Fig 1 .
  6. Remove retaining springs (107) using installation tool (041).
  7. Remove brake shoes (103) over rear axle shaft flange (68).
  8. Remove upper retracting spring (112).
  9. Remove expanding lock (109).
  10. Check cap (110). Make sure it is seated firmly, check for score marks and deformation, replace if necessary.
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Ensure correct seating of retraction springs. Activate SBC brake system. See DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITH STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM)  or DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITHOUT STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM)  under SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Check version of pedal assembly. See PEDAL ASSEMBLY VERSION  under PARKING BRAKE. Operate parking brake pedal several times and adjust as necessary. See PARKING BRAKE  under ADJUSTMENTS.
