Remove/install jacket tube - AR46.10-P-0400QE

Electrically adjustable jacket tube

MODIFICATION NOTES

16.5.06 "Disconnect/connect ground line on battery" removed    
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTESInstallation  Replace self-locking nuts and bolts.    
1 Extend the adjustable steering column fully IMPORTANT Needed for separating the steering coupling (25).  
2 Position steering wheel horizontal (front wheels in straight-ahead position) NOTES On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.  
3 Remove engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105P
4 Remove bolt securing steering coupling to steering shaft (25a) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1001-01E 
5 Pull the lower steering shaft (80a) upward to extract it from the steering coupling (25.) NOTES Do not apply excessive force (hammer blows, excessive lever action) because the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to lateral loads.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Push the lower steering shaft (80a) all the way into the steering coupling (25), observing the pin on the steering coupling (25) and slot in the lower steering shaft (80a).
IMPORTANTInstallation:  If the rack-and-pinion steering is positioned incorrectly, it must be centered again.

Turn rack-and-pinion steering to center position and mount steering coupling
AR46.20-P-0600-01P 
DANGER Risk of injury caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units  . Store airbag unit with deployment face up, do not subject to temperatures above 100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply. AS91.00-Z-0001-01A
6 Remove steering wheel   AR46.10-P-0100P 
NOTES Notes on performing repair, body work and welding on vehicles with airbags and ETR units   AH91.00-P-0002-01M
7 Loosen bolt (1) of steering column module (N80).    
8 Remove steering column module (N80) complete with combination switches and clock spring contact. IMPORTANT Remove steering column module (N80) from steering column by pulling forcefully.
IMPORTANT Secure clock spring contact against twisting with pin. The recess is at approx. 4 o'clock on clock spring contact. The pin is included in clock spring contact repair kit.
 
9 Remove instrument cluster   AR54.30-P-6015P
10 Remove cover beneath instrument panel (left)   AR68.10-P-1500P
11 Remove insulation (foam balls) on left-hand side below instrument panel IMPORTANTRemoval:  Pay attention to installation position of insulation.  
12 Unscrew fuse carrier (2).    
13 Unhook parking brake Bowden cable    
14 Remove parking brake release lever    
15 Remove bolt from lamp switch module IMPORTANT The bolt is located in the recess of the parking brake release lever.  
16 Unplug electrical coupling from lamp switch module    
17 Unclip and remove lamp switch module IMPORTANT Press together two spring clasps (left and right) of lamp switch module.  
18 Remove bolts of instrument panel bottom section (3).    
19 Unplug connector from electric steering lock control unit (N26/5).    
20 Unplug connectors of fore/aft adjustment motor (M20m1) and longitudinal adjustment up/down motor (M20m2).    
21 Remove bolt of reinforcement brace at jacket tube (71).    
22 Loosen reinforcement brace at body and swivel to the side    
23 Remove lower bolt connecting steering column adjustment (91b) to body TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1001-03M 
24 Remove upper bolts connecting steering column adjustment (91b) to body IMPORTANTInstallation:  Fit upper steering column adjustment bolts (91a) (it must still be possible to move the jacket tube (71)).
First tighten upper steering column adjustment bolts (91a).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION
*BA46.10-P-1002-03M 
25 Pull jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) downwards IMPORTANT Until tab (see arrow) of steering column adjustment emerges from guide hole.  
26 Push the jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) downwards and place to left    
27 Remove jacket tube (71) IMPORTANT Carefully pull down instrument panel bottom section and remove jacket tube (71).
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Fix ball joint between jacket tube (71) and lower steering shaft (80a) in place using adhesive tape (facilitates installation).
 
28 Install in the reverse order    
29 Grease rubber sleeve at front inside firewall near bearing seat Klueber Polylub GLY 801 grease *BR00.45-Z-1046-06A
