MODIFICATION NOTES

16.5.06 "Disconnect/connect ground line on battery" removed    
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTESInstallation  Replace self-locking nuts and bolts.    
1 Extend adjustable steering column completely, push out IMPORTANT Needed for separating the steering coupling (25).  
2 Position steering wheel horizontal (front wheels in straight-ahead position) NOTES On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.  
3 Remove engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105P
4 Remove bolt securing steering coupling to steering shaft (25a) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1001-01E 
5 Pull the lower steering shaft (80a) upward to extract it from the steering coupling (25.) NOTES Do not apply excessive force (hammer blows, excessive lever action) because the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to lateral loads and could be damaged.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Insert bottom steering shaft (80a) fully into the steering coupling (25); pay attention to the studs of the steering coupling (25) and groove of the bottom steering shaft (80a).
IMPORTANTInstallation:  If the rack-and-pinion steering is positioned incorrectly, it must be centered again.

Turn rack-and-pinion steering to center position and fit steering coupling (25).

DANGER Risk of injury  caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units. Store airbag unit with deployment face up, do not subject to temperatures above 100 °C.
When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.

6 Remove steering wheel IMPORTANT Front wheels in straight-ahead position. AR46.10-P-0100P 
NOTES Notes on performing repair, body work and welding on vehicles with airbags and ETR units   AH91.00-P-0002-01M
7 Loosen bolt (2) of steering column module (N80).    
8 Remove steering column module (N80) complete with combination switches and clock spring contact. IMPORTANT Remove steering column module (N80) from steering column (see arrow) by pulling forcefully.
IMPORTANT Secure clock spring contact against twisting with pin. The recess (3) is at approx. 4 o'clock on clock spring contact. The pin is included in clock spring contact repair kit.
 
9 Remove instrument cluster   AR54.30-P-6015P
10 Remove cover beneath instrument panel (left)   AR68.10-P-1500P
11 Remove absorber (foam balls) on left-hand side below instrument panel IMPORTANTRemoval:  Pay attention to installation position of insulation.  
12 Unplug electric steering lock control unit connector (N26/5)    
13 Swivel locking handle (99f) of steering column adjustment (4) forwards until it engages with handle arm (99e)    
14 Separate handle arm (99e) from steering column adjustment (4) IMPORTANT Press handle arm (99e) downwards using screwdriver and disengage.  
15 Remove lower bolt connecting steering column adjustment (91b) to body TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1001-03M 
16 Remove upper bolts connecting steering column adjustment (91b) to body IMPORTANTInstallation:  Fit bolts (it must remain possible to slide the jacket tube).
First tighten upper steering column adjustment bolts (91a).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION
*BA46.10-P-1002-03M 
17 Pull jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) upwards until the lug of the steering column adjustment (4) is moved out of the guide bore    
18 Push the jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) downwards and place to left    
19 Remove side cover IMPORTANT At left instrument panel bottom section.  
20 Unscrew fuse carrier (5).    
21 Unhook parking brake Bowden cable    
22 Remove parking brake release lever    
23 Remove lamp switch module bolt IMPORTANT The bolt is located in the recess of the parking brake release lever.  
24 Unplug lamp switch module electrical coupling    
25 Unclip and remove lamp switch module IMPORTANT Press together two spring clasps (left and right) of lamp switch module.  
26 Loosen bolts of instrument panel (6).    
27 Remove jacket tube (71) IMPORTANT Remove jacket tube (71) down and out by lifting instrument panel slightly.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Fix ball joint between jacket tube (71) and lower steering shaft (80a) in place using adhesive tape (facilitates installation).
 
28 Install in the reverse order    
29 Grease rubber sleeve at front inside firewall near bearing seat Klueber Polylub GLY 801 grease *BR00.45-Z-1046-06A
