Function menu
Starting from the basic screen, the following views can be called up in the central status area using the System Selection pushbutton (S110s3) and the Forward/Back pushbuttons (S110s1):
- Digital speedometer
- Service required
- Tire pressure
- Check engine oil level
Starting from the "Driving mode" basic screen in the multifunction display (A1p13), various setting and information menus can be scrolled through by changing the display level using the system selection pushbutton (S110s3) on the multifunction steering wheel. The information is always displayed in the central status area of the multifunction display (A1p13).
Only those functions that are actually installed in the vehicle will be displayed:
- Audio displays
- Radio
- CD
- Cassette
- TV tuner
- Navigation
- Distronic (autonomous intelligent cruise control) (DTR)
- Vehicle configuration
- Telephone display
- Taxi functions
- Telematic
- Trip computer (TRIP)
- Fault and warning messages
Format of the multifunction display (A1p13)
Lower status area
This status range has the following 3 display ranges:
- Gear indicator (A1p12)
- Main odometer
- Transmission mode display (A1p16)

Central status area
In the basic screen layout, the outside temperature and the trip odometer are displayed in this area; the display can be configured.
Display priority
The displays and functions are displayed depending on the situation and priority. The instrument cluster (A1) differentiates between the primary and secondary priority of each message.
The multifunction display (A1p13) initially displays the messages according to their priority. If there are a number of message of the same high priority, the value of the secondary priority of the messages is used to decide the display sequence. New messages have the highest priority.
After it has been displayed once, the message is entered in the display sequence.
These messages are divided into the following three categories according to their priority.
- Category 1 includes the messages of highest priority. These messages cannot be acknowledged. When they occur, a brief warning tone is sounded. Any errors of categories 2 and 3 are hidden.
- Category 2 includes the messages of medium priority. These messages can be acknowledged and canceled using the instrument illumination rheostat and reset knob (A1r1). When they occur, a brief warning tone is sounded. Any faults of category 3 are hidden.
- Category 3 includes the messages of lowest priority. These messages can be acknowledged and canceled using the instrument illumination rheostat and reset knob (A1r1). There is no warning tone.
Fault storage
The messages are stored in 3 rolling memories based on their priority:
- U roll; this is the directory of all warning messages which are not acknowledged which are displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13). Displays of the same of a higher priority are displayed once the minimum display time of the preceding message has elapsed.
After the minimum display time for the warning with the lowest secondary priority has elapsed, the error roll starts again with the warning with the highest secondary priority (ring buffer).
- W roll; all the faults which occurred while driving and were acknowledged are entered here. It can be called up as required from the menu tree in the multifunction display (A1p13). After calling up the W roll first of all a start display with the number of faults occurring is displayed, then the faults are displayed in the sequence of their main priority.
- N roll; In this, after circuit 15R is switched off, all the messages entered in the N roll are called up automatically in the sequence of their secondary priority. The number of errors entered in shown in the start screen. The warning buzzer (A1h1) is actuated briefly synchronously with the presentation of the start pattern. The displayed messages must be acknowledged. The N roll stops when all the warnings have been acknowledged.
If no messages are entered or all messages entered are acknowledged, the multifunction display (A1p13) is switched off after 30 seconds. If some messages have still not been acknowledged, the display will stay on for 2 minutes.
If the N roll is interrupted by a higher priority message, it starts again with the start screen.
With some messages, as long as the fault exists, a warning lamp or indicator lamp is also actuated. This applies even if the corresponding message was acknowledged.
Acknowledging messages
Warning and error messages can be acknowledged automatically or manually. Manual acknowledgment takes place by pressing the scroll forward/back button (S110s1) and the system selection button (S110s3) or the instrument illumination rheostat and reset button (A1r1).
If the cause of an automatically acknowledgeable message is not applicable, the warning is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) for the duration of its minimum display time. For faults, where in addition a warning lamp or indicator lamp is to be actuated, this warning lamp or indicator lamp goes into operation synchronously with the multifunction display (A1p13). The warning lamp or indicator lamp remains actuated, as long as the fault exists, irrespective of whether the fault display on the multifunction display (A1p13) has already been acknowledged.
Reminder of acknowledged messages
If messages were acknowledged while driving, these are displayed once again as a reminder with "Circuit 15R ON". In the process current messages, e.g. "Lights on warning", overlay this reminder function. If there are no messages, the main screen appears after "Terminal 15R ON".
Display stored fault messages as of 1.6.03
When the instrument cluster (A1) is activated the stored messages can be scrolled through as per the following function diagram:
- Press the system selection button (S110s3) until the "PROBLEMS" display appears in the multifunction display (A1p13).
- Scroll through the fault messages using the button + and -, setting of specific functions and volume control (S111s1). The messages are displayed in descending order based on their priority.

When the instrument cluster (A1) is activated the stored messages can be scrolled through as per the following function diagram:
- Press the system selection button (S110s3) until the "PROBLEMS" display appears in the multifunction display (A1p13).
- Scroll through the fault messages using the button + and -, setting of specific functions and volume control (S111s1). The messages are displayed in descending order based on their priority.
- On vehicles with code (414) power glass tilting/sliding roof when the tilting/sliding roof (SHD) is open the warning "SLIDING ROOF OPEN" is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) when the transmitter key is removed (A8/1) and the driver door is open.
- The warning "ENTER TELEPHONE PIN" is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) delayed by t = 60 seconds after starting the engine and acknowledged automatically after t = 5 seconds, if a Personal Identification Number (PIN) has still not been entered.
- The display "DISTRONIC-LOCATE WORKSHOP" is only displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) after the engine is running.
- On model 209.3 it is possible to switch on the opening limit for the trunk lid on the multifunction steering wheel. In the multifunction display (A1p13) this is displayed by the display "OPENING LIMIT FOR TRUNK LID ON/OFF".
- The display "CLEAN SENSOR-SEE OPERATOR'S MANUAL" in the multifunction display (A1p13) is replaced by "DISTRONIC AVAILABLE AGAIN - REACTIVATE".
If the DTR again detects the full sensor availability (dirt detaches while driving), it is also operational again without restarting the vehicle. The message "DISTRONIC AVAILABLE AGAIN - REACTIVATE" is displayed for t = 5 seconds in this case.
