Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels. Remove rear brake discs. See BRAKE DISC (FRONT & REAR)  .
  2. Loosen adjustable slack adjuster (89). See Fig 1 .
  3. Unhook retracting spring (111) using extraction and insertion tool (041). See Fig 2 and Fig 3 .
  4. Unhook retaining springs (107) using installation tool (040). See Fig 4 .
  5. Remove brake shoes (103) over axle shaft flange (68).
  6. Remove return spring (112) and expanding lock (109).
  7. NOTE: Pay attention to correct seating of the return spring (112).
  8. Installation is the reverse of removal. Coat all bearing and slide surfaces on expanding lock, threads on thrust piece (104) and cylindrical part of adjuster wheel with MB long term grease. Turn back adjusting mechanism (105) and insert brake shoes so that adjuster (c) points in direction of travel. Tension adjustable slack adjuster. Torque nuts and bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Check parking brake travel and adjust if necessary. See PARKING BRAKE  under ADJUSTMENTS.
