SL 55 AMG

  1. Deactivate SBC brake system. See DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITH STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM)  or DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITHOUT STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM)  under SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Read out fault codes using STAR DIAGNOSIS compact diagnosis system according to menus on display. See Figure .
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels.
  3. Disconnect brake pad sensor electrical connectors from brake pad sensors. See Fig 1 .
  4. Remove brake pad contact sensor connectors from brake calipers.
  5. Remove retaining pins (41) with a hammer and center punch, remove brake pad retaining plates (31d).
  6. NOTE: When levering out brake pads insert a wooden or plastic wedge between lever and brake caliper.
  7. Remove brake pads from brake caliper. If brake pads are seized, lever brake pads out of brake caliper.
  8. Press brake pad contact sensors out of brake pad backing plate. Check brake pad lining thickness. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS  . Check brake caliper for leaks and dust seal for damage, replace calipers if they are leaking or dust seals are damaged. See BRAKE CALIPER (REAR)  . If calipers are not leaking and dust seals are not damaged, go to next step.
  9. NOTE: If pistons are difficult to move, replace calipers.
  10. Secure one set of pistons with a wedge to prevent them from slipping out, while pressing in other set of pistons with resetting device.
  11. Clean perforations of brake discs if necessary.
  12. Installation is the reverse of removal. Defective contact sensors must be replaced. Do not use any sharp edged or pointed objects for cleaning brake pad guides. Install brake pads dry with brake pad retaining plate pointing in running direction of the vehicle. Activate SBC brake system. See DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITH STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM)  or DEACTIVATING & ACTIVATING SENSOTRONIC BRAKE CONTROL (SBC) SYSTEM (WITHOUT STAR DIAGNOSIS COMPACT DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM)  under SERVICE PRECAUTIONS. Inspect fluid level in expansion reservoir, correct level if necessary.
