Gear indicator (A1p12) in instrument cluster (A1): 

It indicates to the driver the currently selected shift range "1", "2", "3", "4" or the selector lever position "D", "R", "N" (neutral) or "P" (park).

Furthermore, the program, "S" (sport program) or "C" (comfort program), selected at the transmission mode switch (S16/5) is also displayed.
