Parking Brake Adjustments

NOTE: Before adjusting parking brake, check pedal assembly version. See PEDAL ASSEMBLY VERSION  .
  1. Operate parking brake pedal and check pedal travel. If pedal travel is not within tolerance range, adjust parking brake. The tolerance range for a parking brake pedal with a pulled notch parking brake is 27-56 pound-force (120-250 N) to achieve 1 notch. The tolerance range for a pushed notch parking brake is the same to achieve 5 notches.
  2. Raise and support vehicle.
  3. Pretension automatic brake cable slack adjuster by turning detent eccentric bolt to the left using an Allen wrench (approximately half a turn) and simultaneously push backwards in slot until spring-loaded detent eccentric (b) engages with raised section (h) in hold down clip (d). See Fig 1 .
  4. Remove rear wheels.
  5. NOTE: Parking brake shoes are housed in rear brake rotors.
  6. To adjust parking brake use a screw driver to rotate adjusting wheel until parking brake shoes contact brake drum and brake drum/disc can no longer be turned by hand. See Fig 2 . To adjust passenger rear brake shoes, turn adjusting wheel from bottom upwards. To adjust driver rear brake shoes, turn adjusting wheel from top downwards.
  7. Turn back adjusting wheel until brake disc can be turned freely by hand. When loosening adjusting wheels ensure that both sides are turned back by the same number of teeth (approximately 10).
  8. Relieve load on automatic cable slack adjuster by lifting center hold down clip (arrow) using a screwdriver so that cable slack adjuster sets itself automatically. See Fig 3 .
  9. Operate parking brake pedal several times and check pedal travel, then release parking brake.
  10. Check that rear wheels can turn freely.
  11. Install disassembled components in reverse order. Torque nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
