Vibration at steering wheel - AF46.00-P-3001A

MODEL 168, 203, 209, 210, 211, 215, 220, 230, 414

Damage code Cause Remedy
46 531 36 IMPORTANTInformation from customer:  IMPORTANT
  • Under which steering conditions/during which steering operations is vibration present?
  • When is the vibration noticeable? While standing/parking or while driving (under which driving conditions, speed)?
  • Is vibration present occasionally or continuously? When vehicle is warm or cold?
  • Is a change noticeable with engine speed?

IMPORTANTPerform general test/evaluation of vibration at steering wheel:
  1. Check whether customer may be complaining about standard state. If applicable, use comparison vehicle.

IMPORTANT Gasoline and diesel vehicles differ due to their design in terms of the sensations present on the steering wheel resulting from operation.
  1. 2 Check whether vibration can be reproduced.

On diesel vehicles, "pulsating" may be more noticeable than on gasoline vehicles due to the "harder" combustion and lower idle speeds.
  1. 3 Check whether vibration at the steering wheel can be felt even when steering wheel is not moved or only when moved.

To a slight degree, minor vibration at idle speed is normal and not a reason for complaint.
  1. 4 Check operating temperatures at which vibration is felt.

  1. 5 Check whether vibration is present to the same degree when turning to the left/right.

Rough operation and speed variations in the engine also produce vibration which has a direct effect on the steering system, making it necessary to ensure that the engine is running properly before performing further tests.*
  1. 6 Check whether engine has any conspicuous faults in terms of rough operation.

  1. 7 Check whether the same vibration is present at the gear lever, on vehicle floor or seat.

  1. 8 Check whether the problem is pulsating (up to approx. 4 Hz) or high frequency vibration (tingling/tickling).

  1. 9 Check at which speed the vibration can be felt (standing/parking, from - to km/h).

  1. 10 Check whether a hydraulic hose makes contact anywhere.

IMPORTANT Check with steering actuated, because hoses move when under pressure.

  1. 11 Check whether rod condition has an effect on the vibration (rough/smooth surface).

  IMPORTANTSpecific test:  ↓
  1. Switch A/C compressor on and off.

Influencing variables  IMPORTANT Set to "0", not just "AC OFF". Effect present?

  1. 2 Check whether a relationship between the vibration and selector lever position (P/R/ N/D) is recognizable on vehicles with automatic transmission when standing.

  IMPORTANTSpecific test:  ↓
  1. Check whether vibration changes with engine speed.

Speed-dependent  IMPORTANT Present continuously or only in certain engine speed range, if so, which range?
IMPORTANT In the case of vibration while driving: ↓
  1. 2 Evaluate vehicle in different gears and observe relationship to engine speed.

  Cause 1:  Remedy 1:
IMPORTANT The steering gear is rarely the cause for vibration. IMPORTANT It is necessary to note that the hydraulic hoses can move under pressure:
↓

  High pressure hose
  1. Check hydraulic hoses under pressure.

IMPORTANT Usually steering vibration is caused by a hose (primarily high-pressure hose) making contact somewhere so that the vibration is transferred to the hydraulic system.
  1. 2 Check whether steering hose is in contact with body/engine, if necessary, realign hose.

The high pressure steering hose is designed and matched to the specific engine version so that it damps and filters hydraulic variations resulting from operation so that they can no longer be felt at the steering wheel. When new hose versions are available, they are replaced on the part side and, where applicable, published in the up-to-date troubleshooting bulletin.
Vibration complaints, particularly when limited to an engine speed range and not caused by the engine, can be eliminated with new hose versions when available. IMPORTANT If no remedy is known:
↓
  1. 3 Contact workshop service.

  Cause 2:  Remedy 2:
Engine mount/engine operation IMPORTANT Engine runs roughly:
↓

IMPORTANT When the engine does not run smoothly or the engine mounts are not satisfactory, this can have a direct effect on the steering system.
  1. Eliminate rough operation.

This is indicated when the vibration in the vehicle can generally be felt at the shift/ selector lever or at the steering wheel to an above-average extent when not actuated. IMPORTANT Engine runs smoothly, however, vibration still present in vehicle and at steering wheel in relation to engine speed and hose does not make contact anywhere:
↓
  1. 2 Check engine mount for correct seat and relieve tension.

  1. 3 Relieve tension in exhaust system.

  Cause 3:  Remedy 3:
Power steering pump IMPORTANT Vibration present in all speed ranges and not caused by engine or touching hoses:
↓

IMPORTANT Vibrations caused by the pump are generally high frequency and can be noted as tickling/buzzing.
  1. Remove/install/replace power steering pump

Frequently noises of the same frequency are audible.
Vibrations caused by the steering pump change with the engine speed and/or steering pressure build-up.
