Leakage in steering - AF46.00-P-4040AU

MODEL 168, 203, 209, 210, 211, 215, 220, 230, 414

Damage code Cause Remedy
  IMPORTANTInformation from customer:
  • What is customer complaint?
  • How was oil loss noticed? Is oil present below vehicle, noises or stickiness?
  • Slow or sudden oil loss?

  IMPORTANTPerform general check/evaluation of leakage:
  1. Check oil level in reservoir.

IMPORTANT If oil level is not OK: ↓
  1. 2 Locate leakage, use leak oil detection spray if required.

IMPORTANT If oil level is not OK, however, no external oil loss visible: ↓
  1. 3 Open side bellows on steering gear.

IMPORTANT In the event of leakage, oil collects on the side sealing rings in the bellows, however, outer leakage is not visible.
On vehicles with level control (central hydraulic system), model 203/210, the leakage may also be caused by the level control system.

IMPORTANT Differentiate between interface leakage  and component leakage
↓
IMPORTANTInterface leakage  means that the leakage occurs at a connection point between the hydraulic line and power steering pump, rack and pinion steering or oil reservoir.
As a rule, this is caused by damaged sealing rings or dirt, however can also be caused by damaged sealing surfaces, making it necessary to also check the sealing surfaces on components when replacing lines.
IMPORTANT If the sealing surface is not damaged, do not replace component, but rather:
↓

  1. 4 Reseal sealing surface.
AF46.20-P-4044AU
IMPORTANTComponent leakage  means that the component (power steering pump, rack and pinion steering) itself is leaky.
IMPORTANT Only in this case: ↓
  1. 5 Remove/install/replace component.

  Cause 1:  Remedy 1:
46 531 04 High pressure expansion hose leaky
  1. Check interfaces to components (line connections/sealing rings).

46 533 04 Low pressure hose leaky
55 224 38 Hose clamps on hydraulic hose leaky

  1. 2 Check lines for chafe points and cracking.

  1. 3 Check pressed fittings at transition from steel to hose.

IMPORTANT On new vehicles, assembly oil residues may be present, which do not indicate leakage.

46 501 04 Cause 2:  Remedy 2:
Power steering pump IMPORTANT Leakage at an interface (line connections/sealing rings):
↓
  1. Check sealing points; where applicable, remove/install/remove sealing ring.

  1. 2 Check oil reservoir and oil feed line to power steering pump.

IMPORTANT If leakage is present at power steering pump.
↓
  1. 3 Remove/install/replace power steering pump

46 481 04 Cause 3:  Remedy 3:
  Steering gear
  1. Check line connections (sealing rings) for interface leakage.

IMPORTANT If leaks are found: ↓
  1. 2 Remove/install/replace sealing ring.

IMPORTANT If internal oil lines are leaky between the control head and the pressure chambers:
↓
  1. 3 Remove/install/replace steering.

IMPORTANT Work instruction "Replace O-rings" is in preparation

    IMPORTANT Leakage at parameter valve:
↓

  1. 4 Replace parameter valve individually
AF46.50-P-3600A
IMPORTANT Leakage on control head either on control head separation point to steering housing or on propeller shaft input (grease below dust cap is normal, drops must be visible).
↓

  1. 5 In the event of leakage on the control head separation point on models 203, 209 (without PML each) replace O-rings. Otherwise continue with point 6
AR46.20-P-0003Q

  1. 6 Remove/install/replace steering.

REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR
  1. 7 Open side bellows.

IMPORTANT Leakage at side seals on rack on left/right below bellows (steering oil should be clearly recognizable. Grease on rack normal):
↓
  1. 8 Remove/install/replace steering.
