Parking Brake

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheels.
  2. Check brake pad thickness and condition of brake discs. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  3. NOTE: Ensure parking brake is disengaged.
  4. Turn brake discs until access to adjusters (2) is available through lug bolt hole. See Fig 1
  5. Turn adjusters until brake linings are resting against drum surfaces.
  6. Turn brake adjusters back 3 detents.
  7. Remove parking brake lever cover. See PARKING BRAKE LEVER COVER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  8. Apply and release parking brake lever completely 3 times.
  9. Apply parking brake lever up to 4th notch. Actuation force to achieve 4th notch is 225 pound-force (1000 N).
  10. If there is a complaint about brake force, adjust brake force by tightening adjusting nuts (38). Check brake force again after adjustment. If necessary, repeat steps 7-9. See Fig 2 .
  11. Apply and release parking brake lever 3 times completely. After releasing parking brake lever parking brake must have unobstructed movement.
  12. Apply parking brake lever slowly. In process the brake force must increase evenly on both sides. If an even brake force is not achieved, replace brake shoes. See PARKING BRAKE SHOES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  13. Install wheels and torque to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  14. Install parking brake lever cover.
