Notes on "tow-starting and towing" 

The tow-starting of vehicles with automatic transmission is not allowed!

A breakdown vehicle or vehicle trailer must be used to transport a vehicle if possible.

If a vehicle has to be towed, a tow bar must be used if possible.

Instructions for towing vehicles with a transfer case 

The following instructions must be complied with when towing a vehicle with a transfer case in order to prevent damage to the transfer case.

In case of damage to the engine or the transmission and in case of faults in the electrical system 

• Selector lever of automatic transmission to position "N"
• Switch of transfer case to position "N".

In case of damage to front or rear axle 

• The vehicle must not be towed. Only use breakdown vehicle or vehicle trailer to tow the vehicle.

Vehicle must not be towed with the front or rear axle raised.

In case of transfer case damage 

• The propeller shafts to the drive axles must be removed.

Place M10 nuts onto the bolts on the transfer case flange as spacer sleeves and tighten with M8 nuts. This prevents damage to the transfer case housing if the output flange rotates.

If the transfer case cannot be moved to position "N", the vehicle can only be towed for a distance of 50 km and at a maximum speed of 50 km/h. If the towing distance exceeds 50 km, the propeller shafts that are attached to the drive axles must be removed.

The following conditions must be met before towing when switching the transfer case from the "HIGH" or "LOW" position to the "NEUTRAL" position:

• The engine must be switched off.
• Ignition must be switched on.
• The operating voltage must be between 11 V and 16 V.
• The automatic transmission selector lever must be in the neutral position.
• The parking brake must be applied.
• The foot brake pedal must be operated.
• The transfer case switch must be held in the "LOW" position for approximately 6 seconds.

The transfer case is in the "NEUTRAL" position, when the "VG IN NEUTRAL" message appears in the multifunction display. Repeat switching procedure if necessary.

The following conditions must be met after towing when switching the transfer case from the "HIGH" or "LOW" position to the "NEUTRAL" position:

• The operating voltage must be between 11 V and 16 V.
• The automatic transmission selector lever must be in the neutral position.
• The parking brake must be applied.
• The foot brake pedal must be operated.
• The engine must be running.
• The transfer case switch must be held in the "LOW" or "HIGH" position for approximately 6 seconds.

The transfer case is in the "LOW" or "HIGH" position when an "L" (LOW) or an "H" (HIGH) appears in the multifunction display. Repeat switching procedure if necessary.
