Hazards when working with magnesium parts - AS60.00-Z-0005-01N
Model 215
General :
Magnesium has the property of combining with oxygen very quickly. Nevertheless, it is stable when exposed to air because it is covered by a tight, continuous, thin oxide coating which protects the metal beneath against further oxidation. However, if magnesium is ignited in the air, it burns at approx. >500 °C with a blinding white light and high heat development (approx. 2400 °C).
Just as aluminum dust, magnesium dust is combustible and capable of exploding in a mixture with oxygen.
See Accident Prevention Regulations or regulations of professional societies for further information.
Processing magnesium:
- It is not permissible to work on magnesium components with open flame (welding, cutting, brazing, heating, etc.) or to grind which produces sparks.
- In the event of structural damage on the vehicle doors, replace them completely.
Corrosion protection:
- Erroneous coatings, corroded points as well as large surface repairs may not be repaired for corrosion reasons.
- In order to avoid contact corrosion on the bolts for the inner door parts, coat the contact surfaces and bolt shafts with paint after disassembly or replace the bolts.
Never use zinc dust paint!
- Do not remove plastic bushings and washers installed as a standard feature, always replace damaged parts.
- Due to the extremely high contact corrosion, damaged threads in diecast magnesium parts may be repaired only with aluminum Helicoil thread inserts approved by MB.
