Secure steering wheel in center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) |
Use retainer for this.
When the steering coupling is removed, the steering wheel must not be rotated, as the clock spring contact (A45) is otherwise destroyed |

Unscrew bolt (25a) of steering coupling (25) at lower steering shaft (80a) |
Replace locking plate (25f) with self-locking nut |
*BA46.10-P-1001-01E |
| 10 |
Insert suitable tool into the hole in the steering coupling and pull the lower steering shaft (80a) upwards out of the steering coupling (25) |
Do not counterhold at the rubber boot or at the plastic temperature protection disk for the lower steering shaft. Do not use force (blows from a hammer, strong leverage); if necessary, expand clamping slot slightly using a screwdriver
Installation:
When inserting, note the pin of steering coupling (25) and groove of lower steering shaft (80a) (arrows) |
|
| 11 |
Press track rod joint (10a) out of steering knuckle assembly. |

Raise engine at front lifting eye |
Ensure that the rear of the engine does not touch the body |
|
| 15 |
Remove tension rod (18) at the front axle carrier and fold forwards |
The hexagon bolt (18a) must not turn. When loosening the nut, the hexagon screw must be counterheld, as the fixing lugs for caster adjustment in the rubber mount are otherwise sheared off.
Installation:
Only tighten nut (18c) if the vehicle is ready to drive. The rubber mount in the tension rod (18) must not be installed distorted |

| 16 |
Remove spring control arm (17) at the front axle carrier and fold backwards |
The hexagon bolt (17a) must not be twisted. When loosening the nut always hold the hexagon bolt and apply counter-pressure, as the camber adjustment tab in the rubber bushing will be sheared off if the bolt moves.
Installation:
Only tighten nut (17c) if the vehicle is ready to drive. The rubber mount in the spring control arm (17) must not be installed distorted |

Unscrew bolts (1f) at the front axle carrier (1) |
The bolts (1f) are self-tapping, so the following points must be observed:
Installation:
Only use original bolts. Do not position bolts at an angle and do not use an impact wrench.
Installation:
Before tightening the bolts (1f), align the front axle carrier (1) with the drift (a, diameter: 14.8 mm) on the left and right |

Check steering for function and leaks |
There is a grease cushion under the cover cap. It is normal for a small amount of grease to escape and this should not be confused with a leak |
|
| 28 |
Perform a wheel alignment check |
