Automatically dimming outside mirror and inside rearview mirror, function sequence 

The outside mirror glass on the driver and passenger side and inside mirror glass are dimmable electro-chromatically. The mirror glass between the reflector and the glass cover contains a layer of electrolyte gel. The light transmission ratio of the electrolyte gel changes when a control voltage is applied to it. The light hitting the surface of the mirror is more or less reflected due to the variable of the control voltage.

The control voltage is regulated by the inside rearview mirror and the overhead control panel control unit. Control is performed depending on the ratio between the ambient light and the light impinging on the inside rearview mirror glass.

These two input factors are sensed by the mirror dimming forward sensor (A67h1) and mirror dimming backward light sensor (A67h2) in the inside rearview mirror and are read in discretely by the overhead control panel control unit The overhead control panel control unit transmits the dimming information to the front control unit via the interior CAN. The left front door control unit actuates mirror dimming for (M21/1h1) and the right front door control unit actuates mirror dimming for (M21/2h1).

When the interior illumination is switched on or the message "Reverse gear engaged" is transmitted to the interior CAN, the left outside mirror, right outside mirror and inside mirror become brighter.
