Determining distance
The distance is calculated from the vehicle speed (by integrating according to time) in the instrument cluster (A1).
- To calculate the distance and the speed the instrument cluster (A1) computer evaluates the wheel speed of the four wheel speed sensors (L6/1, L6/2, L6/3, L6/4). The instrument cluster (A1) receives the wheel speeds in "rpm" from the traction systems control module (N47) via the CAN/engine compartment.
- The tire size is also taken into account for calculating the distance and the speed.

Displaying total distance
- The 6-digit display appears in kilometers or miles in the basic display of the multifunction display (A1p13) as soon as the instrument cluster (A1) has been activated.
- The display range
is 0 to 999999 kilometers or miles for the total distance recorder.
If the maximum reading is reached, the recorder is not reset to 0. However, the kilometer reading continues to be recorded internally. The instrument cluster (A1) must be replaced in this case.
Displaying trip distance
- The 5-digit display appears in kilometers or miles in the basic display of the multifunction display (A1p13) as soon as the instrument cluster (A1) has been activated.
- The display range is 0 to 9999.9 kilometers or miles for the trip odometer. After the maximum reading is reached, the display is reset to 0.
- Resetting trip odometer
The trip odometer is reset to 0 by pressing the trip odometer reset button (Als3).
Prerequisites:
- The instrument cluster (A1) is activated and
- the basic display (total distance and trip distance) is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13).
Kilometer/miles switchover
The display of distances can be changed over from kilometers to mile units via the settings function.
If CAN values for all wheel speed signals are implausible the display values for total distance recorder and trip odometer are "frozen" and a fault code is set.
The current reading from the total distance recorder is also sent to the CAN/interior from the instrument cluster (A1).
Storing data
The total distance remains stored for at least 5 years when the battery is disconnected.
The trip distance is also protected against loss of data when the battery is disconnected briefly.
