Cockpit management and data system (COMAND) function - GF82.85-P-0003C
MODELS 208, 210 with CODE (352a) COMAND operating and display system except CODE (498) Japanese version
With the aid of the C ockpit M anagement a nd D ata Systems (COMAND) the following systems can be controlled centrally:
- Radio
- Integrated CD player and CD player with changer (optional)
- Sound system (optional)
- Navigation
(dynamic route guidance, up to 01.06.00 optional, after that series, except
)
- Telephone (optional)
- TV tuner and multi-standard decoder
(optional/except
)
- Starguide
(information service) as of 09/00 (only
)
In addition to this a separate socket in the glove compartment can be used to connect a cassette drive or a CD player .
Block diagram of overall COMAND system,
The COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) is the central component in the COMAND system. It contains a video-capable LCD color display for showing information such as operating menus, map data for the navigation and television screen. Operation is via dedicated push-button and two shaft encoders, as well as being menu guided on the display.
Several functions can also be activated with the aid of the multifunction steering wheel push-button. It should be noted that all push-button operations on the multifunction steering wheel are read in first by the instrument cluster (A1) . The instrument cluster (A1) links the incoming push-button operations with the current menu setting in the multifunction display and, where applicable, it then transmits a corresponding CAN message to the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) .
The vehicle can also be equipped optionally with an infrared remote control for issuing commands from the passenger compartment as well as a voice control system (code 813b) for the telephone function, which serves to enhance the operating convenience level.
COMAND Bus system
The digital components in COMAND are linked to each other over a bus system. The bus system is used to transmit data (control commands and useful information) between the various system components. Because the individual components sometimes use different data formats or place different requirements on transmission speed and reliability various bus systems have been installed (refer to block diagram):
- D2B Digital Data Bus
- CAN (A40/3-A1) CAN between COMAND and instrument cluster
- RB CAN Robert Bosch CAN
- The D2B (optical waveguide bus) is used to exchange data between the CD player with changer (in the trunk) (A2/6) , the telephone system and, if present, the voice control system. Here both control data and the actual audio signals (music from CD player, voice when making a call) are transmitted.
- The CAN (A40/3-A1) is used for data exchange with the instrument cluster (A1) . In this way, e.g. the instrument cluster (A1) receives via COMAND the audio, telephone and navigation data for the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1) , as well as the time over this bus.
- The CAN-(A40/3-A1) independent RB CAN serves to set up data exchange between the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) with the optional components TV tuner (A2/42) .
