Removal & Installation

NOTE: Numbers and letters in parenthesis refer to letters and numbers in illustrations.
  1. Disconnect battery. See BATTERY DISCONNECT/CONNECT  under SERVICE PRECAUTIONS.
  2. Disconnect electrical connector (20) from brake fluid indicator switch (S11). See Fig 1 .
  3. Suction off brake fluid from brake fluid reservoir (10).
  4. Disconnect brake lines (5) and seal off connections with plugs.
  5. Disconnect electrical connector on Electronic Stability Program (ESP) pressure sensor (B34) and remove pressure sensor. See Fig 2 .
  6. Remove clutch master cylinder hose (7) if equipped.
  7. Remove rocker pendulum on brake master cylinder.
  8. Remove nuts (19) from brake booster (16).
  9. NOTE: DO NOT tilt stepped tandem brake master cylinder (1), but pull out from the front otherwise thrust rod no longer makes axial contact and can break free of retaining lugs at master control unit.
  10. Pull brake master cylinder (1) off threaded studs and turn to the side.
  11. Remove brake master cylinder.
  12. Installation is the reverse of removal. Install new gasket (17) to ensure brake booster functions correctly. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Bleed brake system and check complete system for fluid leaks. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM  and TESTING FOR LEAKS USING PRESSURE GAUGE  under TESTING.
