The location of the vehicle as well as the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system (after entering the destination). Then the required measures for reaching the destination are started (route guidance). The navigation menu is activated by pressing the "NAV" button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

A navigation processor with a multi-standard disk drive for the digital map data is integral in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

IMPORTANT Note displayed on the navigation CD screen: up to 31.05.01; "Please insert navigation CD" as of 1.06.01; "Please insert type DX navigation CD"

This note is intended to ensure that the correct CD is inserted. The multi-standard disk drive in the navigation unit can also play audio CDs.

Entering the destination (up to 31.5.01)

The destination is entered by using the menu system in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

The data entered are processed by the integral navigation processor.

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) provides the following ways of entering the destination:

Entering the destination (as of 1.6.01)

Using the system menus, the destination is input at the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3); this information is then processed by the navigation processor.

The destination can be entered in the following ways:

Predictive speller (as of 1.6.01)

During entry of the destination, letters not yet entered are supplemented from a list. The predictive speller is only active for the alphabetic name directory and pertains to the entry of the destination and street for navigation.

In the menu Special destinations the submenus "Bypassing other locations..." and "National destinations..." are assisted. The menu "Extraregional destinations..." is subdivided into an additional submenu. The individual menu items in this submenu use the alphabetic name directory.

Dynamic supplementation

This function is realized with the manual entry of the destination. During entry of the destination, letters not yet entered are supplemented from a list. The supplemented characters have a black background. Deleting can be accomplished character by character.

Route calculation

The route is calculated by the navigation processor in accordance with the specified destination, or automatically, after a deviation from the suggested route has taken place.

Position finding

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) calculates continuously the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following procedures:

The navigation processor calculates the most probable location by continuously comparing the results returned by these three methods.

The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor.

Route guidance

Navigation starts once the navigation processor has carried out the route calculation. 3 types of displays can be selected for graphic navigation:

The operator can switch between three types of displays as required. The destination-finding system is also supported by voice output from the vehicle loudspeakers.
