The trip computer (TRIP) allows the average vehicle speed to be displayed:

The display appears when the transmitter key (A8/1) is turned to position 2 (circuit 15 ON) depending on the setting (kilometers or miles) and national version coding of the instrument cluster (A1). The value displayed is updated once a second.

After activating the "Trip Computer" menu using the system selection button (S110s3), the average speed "since reset" is displayed on the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1) by pressing the scroll forward/back button (S110s1) of the multifunction steering wheel. The trip computer (TRIP) determines the average speed from the mileage covered and the travel time. The instrument cluster (A1) receives this data in the following way:

• The travel time is calculated in the instrument cluster (A1).
• The travel distance covered is determined from the 4 wheel rpm.

The signals are passed on the class C (engine compartment) controller area network bus (CAN-C) by the ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5) and read in by the instrument cluster.

Different values may be displayed in the display screen of the short-distance memory and in the display screen of the long-distance memory, as both displays access different data records. The short-distance memory display basically reacts more sensitively to the current driving situation than the long-distance memory display.
