Indicator lamp test 

An indicator lamp test is carried out for "terminal 15 ON". In the process all the indicator and warning lamps (provided fitted as per equipment versions and national versions) are actuated with the exception of the following lamps:

The indicator lamp test only takes place as long as the voltage which is applied to circuit 61 is < 9 V, the alternator (G2) is not operating yet and the engine speed is < 200 rpm.

If no malfunctions are present the indicator lamps will go out as soon as the engine starts to run.

Engine running detection, circuit 61e 

The instrument cluster (A1) links the circuit 61 and engine speed Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN) messages to the circuit 61e CAN message (engine running detection).

The circuit 61e CAN message is relayed by the instrument cluster (A1) to the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C).

The circuit 61e CAN message is required by the CDI control unit (N3/9) or the ME control unit (N3/10) and by the ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5).

The circuit 61e CAN message can have the status "HIGH" or "LOW". It is "LOW" precisely when the voltage which is applied to circuit 61 is < 9 V and the engine speed is < 200 rpm. In all other cases the message status is "HIGH".

The instrument cluster (A1) receives these CAN messages and evaluates them as described above.

The same information is used for the warning message "BATTERY/ALTERNATOR - LOCATE WORKSHOP". This warning message appears in the multifunction display (A1p13), when the CAN message "Circuit 61 LOW" is present and the engine speed is > 200/min.

Notice regarding the chart 

The CAN message "circuit 61" can have the status "HIGH" and "LOW". The status depends on the actual voltage at the input of the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1). The status is "HIGH" when the voltage which is applied to circuit 61 rises above 9 V and it is "LOW" again when the voltage drops below 4.5 V.
