The warning message "Check washer fluid level!" (see picture 1) is displayed after every trip cycle, it cannot be acknowledged. It is automatically acknowledged after a certain period of time.
In the event of malfunctions warning messages are displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13). These warning messages are divided up into 3 categories and stored in 3 fault rolls (U-, W- and N-roll).
Category 1
Warning messages with the highest priority.
These warning messages cannot be deleted. When they occur a short warning sound is issued via the warning buzzer (A1h1) and the fault is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13). Any category 2 and 3 warning messages are cross-faded.
Category 2
Warning messages with medium priority.
These warning messages can be acknowledged with the trip odometer reset button (A1s3). When they occur a short warning sound is issued via the warning buzzer (A1h1) and the fault is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13). Any category 3 warning messages are cross-faded.
Category 3
Warning messages with the lowest priority.
These warning messages can be acknowledged with the trip odometer reset button (A1s3). There is no warning tone.
The warning message "Check washer fluid level!" (see picture 1) is displayed after every trip cycle, it cannot be acknowledged. It is automatically acknowledged after a certain period of time.
U roll
The U roll is the directory of all unacknowledged warning messages displayed on the multifunction display (A1p13).
Warning messages of identical or higher primary priority are displayed once minimum display period of the preceding warning message has elapsed.
Once the minimum display time for the warning message with the lowest secondary priority has elapsed, the fault roll starts again at the warning message with the highest secondary priority.
W roll
All the warning messages which occurred while driving and have been acknowledged are entered in the W roll.
The W roll can be called up in the menu of the multifunction display (A1p13) at any time. Once the W-roll is called up first an initial picture is displayed with the number of warning messages which occurred. The warning messages are then displayed in their priority order.
N roll
In the N roll, after circuit 15R is switched off, all the warning messages entered in the N roll are called up automatically in their priority sequence.
The number of warning messages entered is displayed in the initial picture. The warning buzzer (A1h1) sounds briefly when the start screen is displayed. The warning messages displayed must be acknowledged.
If all the warning messages are acknowledged, the N-roll is finished. If no warning messages have been entered or all warning messages have been acknowledged, the multifunction display (A1p13) switches off after 30 seconds.
If unacknowledged warning messages remain, the multifunction display (A1p13) switches off after 2 min.
When the N roll is an interrupted by a warning message of higher priority a new start is made with the starting display.
Display of warning messages
Apart from a few exceptions warning messages are not displayed until the engine is running. Current warning messages are displayed immediately.
If warning messages were acknowledged while driving, these are displayed once again with "Circuit 15R OFF" as a reminder. In the process current warning messages, e.g. lights on warning, hide this reminder function.
If the fault is only present briefly, warning messages in categories 2 and 3 are displayed for at least t = 2 seconds. Warning messages in category 1 are only displayed for as long as the fault is present.
Several current warning messages:
- If there are several faults in different categories, the warning message in the category classified as more important is displayed. New warning messages classified in the same or a higher category hide the warning message displayed previously.
- If there are several faults of the same category, the warning messages are always displayed alternately every 5 seconds.
Some warning messages in the multifunction display (A1p13) are accompanied by the illumination of a warning or indicator lamp. These lamps are actuated for as long as the fault exists. This also applies if the associated message has been acknowledged.
Example of display priority
4 of the many possible warning messages are shown below with a short description.
The order in which the warning messages are displayed if several faults occur at the same time can be explained using an example:
- If the washer fluid level is too low, a category 3 warning message is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) which calls for a check on the washer fluid level (see picture 1).
- If in addition a fault occurs in the alternator (G2), the category 2 warning message which requests locating a workshop is displayed (see picture 2). This warning message hides the first warning message due to its higher priority.
- If in addition the coolant level is also too low, the category 2 warning message which calls for a check on the coolant level is displayed (see picture 3). The display now changes every t = 5 seconds between this warning message and the alternator check warning message (see picture 2) as there are 2 messages of the same priority.
The "Check washer fluid level!" warning message is displayed after every trip cycle, it cannot be acknowledged. It is automatically acknowledged after a certain period of time.
The example is based on the assumption that none of the warning messages were acknowledged.
A warning message in category 2 is displayed if there is a fault in the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B) and/or the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) and as a result the connection to several control units is faulty (see picture 4). If the connection to only one control unit is faulty, the symbol of the system in question is faded in.
