Dismantling 

1. 1 -  Disassemble transmission housing:

   Transmission 716.6 (cars except model 209.4) without Sequentronic automated manual transmission (SEQ). See DISASSEMBLE/ASSEMBLE TRANSMISSION HOUSING .

2. 2 -  Remove reverse idler shaft (2) with reverse gear (4). See Fig 1. Also, see REMOVE/INSTALL REVERSE IDLER SHAFT WITH REVERSE GEAR .

   Use a hot-air gun.

3. 3 -  Dismount locking plate (8).
4. 4 -  Remove radial shaft sealing ring (12).
5. 5 -  Press out main shaft bearing (10).

   Use Sleeve (716 589 01 33 00). See Figure.

6. 6 -  Pull out countershaft bearing (9).
   NOTE: The transmission casing incorporates two recesses on opposite sides; these are designed to accommodate the two-limb internal puller.

   Use Two-limb internal puller (716 589 05 33 00). See Fig 2.

7. 7.1 -  Pull out shift shaft bearing (11).

   Up to transmission end No. 1201092.

   Internal extractor (000 589 25 33 00). See Figure.

   Countersupport (000 589 33 33 00). See Figure.

Dismantling 

1. 8  Recut thread for fixing the locking plate (8).
2. 9 -  Press in main shaft bearing (10).
   NOTE: The groove (arrow) on the outer race must point to the front (drive direction).

   Use Drift (716 589 00 15 00). See Figure.

3. 10 -  Press in countershaft bearing (9).
   NOTE: Place shims under rear section of transmission housing so that the housing is straight when pressing in. The inscription on the bearing must point upwards (direction towards the front section).

   Use Drift (716 589 03 15 00). See Fig 3.

4. 11.1 -  Press in shift shaft bearing (11).

   Up to transmission end No. 1201092.

   Use Drift (711 589 04 15 00). See Fig 4.

5. 12 -  Tighten locking plate (8).
   NOTE: Replace bolts (7).

   Torque specification: Bolt of locking plate to transmission. See TRANSMISSION HOUSING .

6. 13 -  Install reverse idler shaft (2) with reverse gear (4).

   Oil cylindrical roller bearing, reverse idler shaft and washer. See REMOVE/INSTALL REVERSE IDLER SHAFT WITH REVERSE GEAR .

   Torque specification: Reverse idler shaft retaining bolt. See GEAR ASSEMBLY, SHAFTS .

7. 14 -  Assemble transmission housing:

   Transmission 716.6 (cars except model 209.4) without Sequentronic automated manual transmission (SEQ). See DISASSEMBLE/ASSEMBLE TRANSMISSION HOUSING .
