The fuel supply system must provide an adequate quantity of filtered fuel from the fuel tank and at an adequate pressure (injection pressure) to the fuel injectors in all operating conditions.
Function
The fuel pump (M3) draws the fuel out of the fuel tank (75) and pumps it through the fuel filter with integrated diaphragm pressure regulator (55/1) to the injectors connected to the fuel rail (17) (single-line system).
The fuel pressure is controlled to about 3.7 - 4.1 bar by the diaphragm pressure regulator. The fuel pressure is regulated irrespective of the intake manifold pressure. If the throttle is blipped, the fuel supply is assured by the matched acceleration enrichment. The high-volume fuel rail prevents the formation of vapor bubbles.
Excess fuel flows back pressureless from the diaphragm pressure regulator in the fuel filter to the fuel tank (75).
Air is admitted to the diaphragm pressure regulator in the fuel filter through a hose line to the evaporative emission control system.
The fuel injectors operated by the ME-SFI control module, spray the finely atomized fuel into the inlet port.
