The location of the vehicle, the direction and distance to the destination (after destination entry) are determined with the aid of the navigation system.

It calculates the data for reaching the destination (navigation).

The navigation system is activated by pressing the "NAV" button on the radio and navigation unit (A2/56).

A navigation processor with a CD drive for the digital data has been integrated into the radio and navigation unit (A2/56).

Entry of the destination can be accomplished with menu guidance on the operating unit of the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) and is processed by the navigation processor.

The radio and navigation unit (A2/56) provides the following options for destination input:

Predictive text input

While entering a destination the letters which are still missing are completed from an existing word list. The input aid relates to the destination and the street input for navigation.

In the "Points of interest" menu, the submenus of "Near other locations" and "nationwide destinations" are supported. The "Nationwide destinations" menu is subdivided into an additional submenu.

Dynamic supplementation

This dynamic supplementation is implemented with the manual entry of the destination. While entering a destination the letters which are still missing are completed with the aid of an existing word list. The supplemented characters have a black background. Characters can be deleted character by character.

Position finding

The navigation processor in the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) continuously calculates the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following methods:

The navigation processor calculates the most likely position of the vehicle by constantly comparing the location results of these three methods.

Route calculation

The route is calculated in the navigation processor after destination input by the driver or automatically after a deviation from the proposed route.

In the dynamic navigation system the route calculation is automatically influenced by the incorporation of traffic news.

The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor.

Route guidance

After the navigation processor has calculated the route, navigation starts up. Navigation is considerably supported in all cases by voice output from the vehicle loudspeakers.
