Installing Main Shaft With Countershaft With Shift Unit

  1. 1 -  Fit input shaft, main shaft and countershaft together and place assembly plate (1) on input shaft and countershaft:

    On 25 mm diameter countershafts: Use assembly plate (210 589 01 31 00). See Figure.

    On 32 mm diameter countershafts: Use assembly plate (716 589 00 31 00). See Figure.

  2. 2 -  Clamp input shaft, main shaft and countershaft in a vise with assembly plate.
  3. 3 -  Fit shift unit (2).
    NOTE: All the shift forks must engage in the corresponding sliding sleeves (arrows).

  4. 4 -  Oil countershaft bearing (6) in rear section of transmission housing (3).

  5. 5 -  Fit rear section of transmission housing (3) on main shaft and countershaft.
    NOTE: Only on vans with transmission 716.643 and on cars with transmission 716.6 with Sequentronic automated manual transmission (SEQ) code 424.

    Push the shift shaft for reverse gear through the sensor hole in the housing (arrow) towards the main shaft so that it can be inserted into the bearing bore.

    NOTE: The main shaft, countershaft and the two shift shafts must slot into the corresponding bearing bores.

    Then check with a torch whether the reverse gear (4) engages in the reverse gear idler gear (5) and in the teeth on the countershaft (6). See Fig 3.

  6. 6 -  Fit short insertion sleeve (7) on main shaft, attach old collared nut (8) and screw on until the end of the thread on the main shaft is reached.
    NOTE: Oil collared nut and insertion sleeves. See Figure.

    Lock main shaft and countershaft with a plastic wedge.

    Ensure that the four guide sleeves on the shift unit are inserted into the bores in the rear section of the transmission housing.

    Repeat this step using different insertion sleeves until the rear section of the transmission housing is pressed fully home on the main shaft.

  7. 7 -  Unscrew old collared nut (8) and remove insertion sleeves.
  8. 8 -  Remove rear section of transmission housing with input shaft, main shaft and countershaft from vise.
  9. 9 -  Secure shift unit with four bolts (9).

  10. 10 -  Remove assembly plate (1).
  11. 11.1 -  Insert main shift rail (11) into shift unit.
    NOTE: Only on vans with transmission 716.643 and on cars with transmission 716.6 with Sequentronic automated manual transmission (SEQ) code 424.
