Remove/install steering wheel - AR46.10-P-0100C

MODIFICATION NOTES

20.1.04 Owing to the precise tolerances the vehicle should not be subjected to an alignment check after the steering wheel has been remounted    
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/Install     
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury  caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear protective gloves, acid-resistant clothing and safety glasses. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. AS54.10-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of injury.  Injuries may result when performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units. Store airbag unit with deployment face up, do not subject to temperatures above 100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply. AS91.00-Z-0001-01A
1 Fully retract or push in adjustable steering column    
2 Turn steering wheel (32) to horizontal position IMPORTANT Front wheels in straight ahead position  
3.1 Remove ignition key and engage steering lock Model 170  
3.2 Remove electronic ignition key Model 208  
    IMPORTANT The electronic steering lock (ESC) is locked.  
4 Disconnect ground cable from battery IMPORTANT Protect the ground cable to prevent unintentional contact with the battery ground terminal. AR54.10-P-0003A

5 Remove airbag unit from steering wheel (32)   AR91.60-P-0660G
NOTES Instructions for performing repair, body work and welding on vehicles with airbags and ETR units   AH91.00-P-0002-01B
6 Unscrew countersunk screw (32c), steadying steering wheel (32). IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace countersunk bolt.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1001-02A 
7 Remove the steering wheel (32), guiding the wiring for the airbag assembly through it. IMPORTANTInstallation:  Align recesses of the splines in the steering wheel with the markings on the steering shaft (arrows).  
8 Check fanfare horns and airbag clock spring contact (A45) for damage NOTES The clock spring contact must not be turned while the steering wheel (32) is removed otherwise it will be damaged.  
    INSPECT Visual inspection, replace clock spring contact if necessary: ↓  
    Remove/install clock spring contact AR46.10-P-0200B 
9 Install in the reverse order    
10.1 Activate steering angle sensor Vehicles with Electronic Stability Program (ESP) Code 472a AR46.10-P-0300-01A 
11 Conduct a road test IMPORTANT Tests during the road test:  
    Turn signal reset   
    If displacement is greater than 1 tooth, a problem-free canceling of turn signals is not guaranteed.  
    Airbag indicator lamp   
    The SRS indicator lamp must not light up on full steering lock in both directions.  
    Position of steering wheel (32)   
    If the steering wheel is crooked, adjust it by max. 1 tooth.
