MODIFICATION NOTES

3.9.03 Check ring gear, newly recorded Step 10.1  
REMOVING Remove     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the and position the four support plates below the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery acid.
Risk of injury  caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries
No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and safety glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. AS54.10-Z-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
1 Disconnect ground cable from battery NOTES Do not connect a quiescent current retention device. Risk of short circuit!

2.1 Remove right catalytic converter Models 220.179  
    Models 215, 220.176 AR49.10-P-5500M
    Model 240 AR49.10-P-5531H
2.2 Remove complete exhaust system Model 230 AR49.10-P-7000RB
3 Remove bolts (1, 2)    
4.1 Loosen bolt (3) Models 215, 220, 240  
5 Unscrew bolt (4) and remove heat shield (5)    
6 Detach protection against accidental contact (6) and dismount electrical line circuit 30 (7)    
7 Dismount electrical line circuit 50 (9)    
8.1 Unscrew bolt (3) and remove catalytic converter (8) Models 215, 220, 240  
8.2 Remove bolt (3) Model 230  
9 Take starter (M1) down and out    
10.1 Check ring gear on the drive plate for wear and damage When replacing the starter
IMPORTANT Rotate engine at the crankshaft in direction of rotation.
 
INSTALLING Install     
11 Position starter (M1) at crankcase    
12.1 Loosely position bolt (3) with catalytic converter bracket (8) Models 215, 220, 240  
12.2 Loosely position bolt (3) Model 230  
13 Connect electrical line circuit 50 (9) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.30-P-1002-01G 
14 Connect electrical line circuit 30 (7) and attach protection against accidental contact (6) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.30-P-1001-01G 
15 Loosely position heat shield (5) with bolts (1, 2) IMPORTANT Pay attention to cable clamp at bolt (1).  
16 Loosely position bolt (4) IMPORTANT Pay attention to heat shield (5).
17 Tighten bolts (3, 4) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.30-P-1003-01G 
18 Tighten bolts (1, 2) for heat shield (5) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.30-P-1004-01G 
19.1 Install right three way catalytic converter Models 220.179  
    Models 215, 220.176 AR49.10-P-5500M
    Model 240 AR49.10-P-5531H
19.2 Install exhaust system complete Model 230 AR49.10-P-7000RB
20 Connect ground cable to battery Models 215, 220 AR54.10-P-0003I
    Model 230 AR54.10-P-0003R
    Model 240 AR54.10-P-0003H
21 Carry out function check    
22 Render electrical system operational See ↓
Perform basic programming
 
    Models 215, 220 AR00.19-P-0200M
    Model 230 AR00.19-P-0200R
    Model 240 AR00.19-P-0200H
23 Read out fault memory and erase IMPORTANT When the work is complete stored faults must be worked on in the diagnostic trouble code memories and erased.↓  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS   Connect up STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory AD00.00-P-2000-04A
