Replace Brake Fluid: Notes

WARNING: Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury from brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes. Pour brake fluid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. See RISK OF POISONING FROM SWALLOWING BRAKE FLUID .

See brake fluid notes. See NOTES ON BRAKE FLUID .

See notes on repairs to brake system. See NOTES ON REPAIRS TO BRAKE SYSTEM .

  1. 1 -  Note fluid level of brake fluid reservoir (10). See Fig 1.
  2. 2 -  Unscrew cap (11).
  3. 3 -  Empty chambers in brake fluid reservoir (10) down to a fluid level of approx. 10 mm. DO NOT drain brake fluid reservoir (10) completely.

Replace brake fluid with filler and bleeder unit.

  4. 4 -  Connect filler and bleeder unit according to manufacturer's instructions.
  5. 5 -  Allow approx. 8 cm3 of brake fluid to flow out at each wheel brake and at clutch slave cylinder in vehicles with manual transmission. Tighten bleed screws to specifications using socket wrench 140 589 03 09 00. See Fig 2 - Fig 3 . Clear brake fluid free of bubbles must flow out of the bleed hose.

Replace brake fluid without filler and bleeder unit.

  6. 6.1 -  Without filler and bleeder unit: fill brake fluid reservoir (10) with brake fluid up to the "MAX" mark.
  7. 7.1 -  Pump out the old brake fluid with 10 pump strokes at each wheel brake and at the clutch slave cylinder. Fill with fresh brake fluid. The brake fluid emerging via the bleed hose must be clear and free of bubbles. Do not empty reservoir completely.
  8. 8 -  Disconnect filler and bleeder unit.
  9. 9 -  Correct the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir (10). Note and maintain fluid level of brake fluid reservoir (10). Fill with fresh brake fluid. See Fig 2.
  10. 10 -  Screw on cap (11).
