The trip computer (TRIP) allows the average fuel consumption to be displayed.

The display appears from position 2 (circuit 15 ON) of the transmitter key (A8/1) depending on the setting (kilometers/miles) and national version coding of the instrument cluster (A1).

After activating the "Trip Computer" menu using the system selection button (S110s3), the driver presses the scroll forward/back button (S110s1) of the multifunction steering wheel to display the average fuel consumption "since start" on the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1). The trip computer (TRIP) determines the average fuel consumption from the mileage covered and the consumption signal. The instrument cluster (A1) receives this data in the following way:

• The consumption signal is passed as a message on the class C (engine compartment) controller area network bus (CAN-C) by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) or CDI control unit (N3/9).
• The travel distance covered is determined from the 4 wheel speeds. The signals are placed on the CAN-C by the ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5).

Different values may be displayed on the display of the short-distance memory and on the display of the long-distance memory, as both displays access different data records.

The short-distance memory display basically reacts more sensitively to the current driving situation than the long-distance memory display.

Once the memory has been reset there is not sufficient data available to calculate the fuel consumption correctly As a transitional solution for this period, the display shows a calculated figure based on the individual vehicle's fuel consumption; this display varies according to the unit setting (miles or kilometers) and the national version code entered in the instrument cluster (A1). The actual current fuel consumption may vary from the figure indicated. The maximum available display is 40 l/100 km.
