The compressor (50) is a screw-type compressor which operates according to the positive displacement principle with inner compression.

The air flowing in is led to the suction side opening (A) at the rear of the operating space of the compressor.

Rotation in connection with the geometry of the two helical spindles 1 and 2 (50/1, 50/2) seals off the operating chamber from the outer environment after entry of the intake air. The enclosed air volume is compressed through reduction in size of the operating space between the housing and the two helical spindles.

Further turning causes the compressed air to be pushed out of the opening on the pressure side (B) in the direction of the charge air cooler.

The maximum charge pressure is about 1.1 bar on achieving the engine breakway speed.

The compressor is driven directly from the crankshaft over the magnetic clutch on the mechanical charger (Y2/1) and a separate poly-V-belt.

It is actuated at a high load and from a speed of 2900 rpm, by the ME control unit via the magnetic clutch on the mechanical charger.

The compressor is set in motion when the engine is in suction mode, that is for a non-actuated magnetic clutch on the mechanical charger by the air stream sucked into the engine.
