Left Cylinder Bank Purge Control Valve (Y58/2)

NOTE: Left cylinder bank purge control valve (Y58/2) is located below left cylinder bank hot film MAF sensor (B2/6). Left cylinder bank hot film MAF sensor (B2/6) is located on right side of engine (because of intake manifold crossover). Activated charcoal canister shutoff valve (Y58/4) is located behind storage area located behind driver seat. For ME-SFI control module location and identification, see ME-SFI CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  .
  1. Actuation -  Connect oscilloscope between left cylinder bank ME-SFI control module connector 1 terminals No. 10 and 25 (socket box terminals No. 10 and 25). Observe oscilloscope. Start engine. With engine idling and engine coolant temperature approximately 176°F (80°C), left cylinder bank purge control valve (Y58/2) should noticeably cycle after approximately one minute. See SIGNAL PATTERN IDENTIFICATION  . If left cylinder bank purge control valve (Y58/2) oscilloscope signal is okay, go to next step. If left cylinder bank purge control valve (Y58/2) oscilloscope signal is not okay, possible causes are left cylinder bank purge control valve current consumption problem, vacuum control (hose) failure, or defective left cylinder bank ME-SFI control module (N3/11). Repair as necessary. To check left cylinder bank purge control valve current consumption, go to next step. To check vacuum control, go to step  3 .
  2. Current Consumption -  Turn ignition off. Connect ammeter between left cylinder bank ME-SFI control module connector 1 terminals No. 38 and 10. (socket box terminals No. 38 and 10). Turn ignition on. Ammeter should indicate 0.1-0.3 amps. If amperage is within specification, test is complete. If amperage is not within specification, possible causes are wiring harness failure or defective left cylinder bank purge control valve (Y58/2). Repair as necessary.
  3. Vacuum Control -  Disconnect vacuum hose at left cylinder bank purge control valve (Y58/2 - located on EVAP canister side of left purge control valve). Connect a vacuum tester to left cylinder bank purge control valve (Y58/2) vacuum port. Start engine and idle at normal operating temperature. While observing vacuum tester, slowly increase engine speed up to a maximum of 3000 RPM. After approximately one minute, vacuum should be more than 50 mbar and fluctuate (purge control valve will cycle). If vacuum responds as indicated, go to next step. If vacuum does not respond as indicated, possible causes are defective vacuum lines or defective left cylinder bank purge control valve (Y58/2). Repair as necessary.
    NOTE: Activated charcoal canister shutoff valve (Y58/4) and fuel tank pressure sensor (B4/3) are controlled by the right cylinder bank ME-SFI control module (N3/12).
  4. Leaktightness -  Connect jumper wire between right cylinder bank ME-SFI control module connector 1 terminals No. 26 and 34 (socket box terminals No. 26 and 34). Connecting jumper wire will allow activation of activated charcoal canister shutoff valve (Y58/4). Disconnect purge control line (at vacuum tee) to activated charcoal canister. Vacuum tee connects both purge control valves to activated charcoal canister. Connect vacuum pump to purge control line. Turn ignition on. Apply approximately 25 mbar of vacuum to purge control line. Vacuum pump should indicate a less than 5 mbar pressure drop after approximately one minute. If pressure drop is okay, go to Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor (B4/3)  . If pressure drop is not okay, possible causes are fuel tank cap leaking, purge control line to activated charcoal canister leaking, purge control line from activated charcoal canister to activated charcoal canister shutoff valve (Y58/4) leaking, activated charcoal canister defective, activated charcoal canister shutoff valve (Y58/4) defective or fuel tank pressure sensor (B4/3) defective. Repair as necessary.
