Removal & Installation (SL Class)
- Disconnect battery negative cable. Remove driver's side air bag module from steering wheel. Remove module from vehicle. Place module away from work area with pad facing up.
- If vehicle has telescoping steering column, pull steering wheel completely out and lock into position. If vehicle does not have telescoping steering column, remove steering wheel. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Allow steering lock to engage. Mark steering wheel-to-shaft position to aid in reassembly. Remove steering wheel hub bolt. Pull steering wheel off by hand or steering wheel puller, if necessary. When removing steering wheel, use extreme care not to break carbon contacts mounted to top of steering column.
- To remove instrument cluster, insert 2 Removal Hooks (140-589-02-33-00), with hooks facing down, between instrument panel and sides of instrument cluster. See Fig 1. Turn removal hooks 90 degrees inward toward instrument cluster. Carefully pull both hook handles outward to engage hooks in recesses in rear of cluster.
- Holding each hook at about 120 degree angle away from center of instrument cluster, alternately pull each side of instrument cluster out about .2" (5 mm) at a time. Do not pull on both hooks at the same time. Disconnect electrical connectors and remove instrument cluster. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten steering wheel bolt to 60 ft. lbs. (80 N.m).
